Contents of unmarked Cylinder

I just picked up 9 cylinders from a HVAC company that went out of business, most have the contents labeled but one cylinder only has a partial label so I'm not sure whats in it. My guess is O2 or CO2, but one tank did have a Nitrogen label so that's also a possibility i guess.What is Nitrogen used for in the HVAC business - just curious?Can my LWS provider run some kind of test to determine the contents?Thanks,Mark"Never trust anything you read on the Internet" - Abraham Lincoln

Reply:Nitrogen is used to test refrigeration piping and systems. Purge natural gas lines before welding on them .

Reply:You may already know that CO2 uses the CGA 320 style of threaded connection. It is by itself with a nut that goes over the threads on the cylinder outlet. It generally uses a plastic or fiber washer to seal the connection to a flow meter, although some flow meters have an o-ring built into the adapter. The other main type is the 580 style with the nut screwing into the cylinder valve. That could contain Argon, Argon/CO2 or any gas using that style of valve. I don't know all of the types. As others said above, it you have an unmarked cylinder and aren't sure, it would be safest to trade it in, or at least try to have your supplier identify it.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
Reply:Is the cylinder painted? O2 cylinders are almost always green, Any other color could be just about anything, I have seen CO2 cylinders in blue quite a bit used on air lifts (HVAC air powered duct lifts), they tend to have the safety guard built into the tank around the valve
Reply:Don't bet on the color of any cylinder.  Thoroughbred (http://www.gaspony.com/) paints ALL their cylinders blue - Acet, Oxy, CO2, Argon... except propane is white.   Airgas paints all their specialty gas cylinders teal.  From Airgas:  http://www.airgas.com/content/detail...=7000000000243  Right in the first paragraph you will find this tidbit of advice:  "Cylinder color should never be used to identify contents.
