I've got a 110v air compressor that I got but when I got it it wasn't wired up at all.  It's got 5 wires in it.2 Wires are from inside the motor itself3 Wires from the power.  1 of which is ground of course. So inside the compressor there is a white wire and a orange wire. From the power there is a black and white.  Green being ground and already grounded. There's 5 total terminals, 2 terminals are the same as they are connected together.  All the terminals have no markings other than 1, 2, 3, 4.  It's really helpful....  Terminal 1, 2, and 4 are single prongs and Terminal 3 is the one with the double prong. It's a Craftsman 3hp motor.  Compressor is the Sears model 919.176730Last edited by Laccery; 07-11-2009 at 05:10 PM.Reason: Added InfoHobart Handler 1871998 VW Jetta TDI - 1997 VW Jetta Project Carhttp://calebhammel.com
Reply:I found a manual for your machine, but it doesn't have a wiring diagram for the motor. In case you want to print it for future reference, the link is located here: Sears Compressor ManualI don't follow your description well enough to give advice; could you post a picture of what is there? Are the terminals you mention on the pressure switch or somewhere else; by "3 Wires from the power." do you mean in the power cord; and what is meant by "inside the compressor there is a white wire and a orange wire."?  You need to be more specific about which component they are connected to.
Reply:The manual indicates that this model # is capable of dual voltage connection.  Are you sure that there are no other wires that come from inside the motor, specifically I would be looking for a red and a brown wire?Millermatic 252"Don't worry, he's got a welder, he can fix anything"
Reply:Here you can see the numbering and all 5 terminals and you can see all 5 wires.  2 of which coming from the motor and 3 of which from the power cable. I know it looks like the orange/brown wire and the white wire coming from the motor go to the 2 terminals they are in front of but that's just because they were plugged into those terminals while I was trying out wire combinations to get it to work.Hobart Handler 1871998 VW Jetta TDI - 1997 VW Jetta Project Carhttp://calebhammel.com
Reply:Without seeing the inside of the motor, and tracing the wires from the coils and switches, etc, it's at best difficult to guess about the terminals; there's no convention that I know of.I's there a nameplate on the motor itself? You might be able to look it up on the internet, and find a manual, or wiring diagram for it. Or, post the information here if you don't feel capable of interpreting the details, if you find any.
Reply:As the manual states the units come wired for 120v and you haven't indicated the cord plug is anything other than a standard 15amp three prong I say white-to-white and black-to-orange.  Does terminal 4 look as if it was a two prong? And the manual states "Instructions for connecting the motor for operation at 240 volt can be found printed on the inside of the motor cover or on the nameplate of the motor."  Is it there?MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I feel dumb now.  Yeah, there was a tiny tiny sketch on the side panel of the cover plate.  Connected it as described for 110v and turned right on.Hobart Handler 1871998 VW Jetta TDI - 1997 VW Jetta Project Carhttp://calebhammel.com
Reply:You're not dumbYou just self taught yourself a valuable lessonMost dual voltage motors have the alternate schematic somewhere on the faceplate, or on the inside of the cover that gives you access to the wiring.  Some of the import crap doesn't, and if it does it may be wrong.Smarter, and wiser, and next time around you'll be the one giving the advice"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
