Hey guys, getting ready for my next project. I have an old quincy 325 compressor that I want to mate up to a yanmar l40 diesel to make a mobile compressor.Ive seen it done before but normally with the higher horsepowered l100 diesel.  Im having a hard time finding much information on the net as far as how to set up the controls for the unloader to the diesel etc.  Also, Im a pretty decent engine mechanic, and have plumbed up plenty of volume tanks and gas/air manifolds, but ive never really tore into a compressor. Im debating whether or not to send it to a shop or do it myself. A couple of you guys seem pretty knowledgable and was wondering what your opinions where. Also I should state that I'd like it to be pull start w/ an output psi of around 140.2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302
Reply:That 325 Quincy compressor is a fine machine. I have one hooked up to a 5HP 3 phase Baldor motor at home. I have had the Quincy apart before but cannot help you regarding connecting up the compressor to a diesel engine. I suggest you take the valves out of the compressor and clean them before you use the compressor. There is a certain way you take these out and if it is not done correctly you can (and will) break some cast iron. Here is what you may find inside. The valves rust up very easily on a Quincy and need cleaning every 6 months to a year. Usually only the high pressure side rust up. The first stage remains clean for the most part, as you can see in my pics of the last time I removed the valves for cleaning.Low pressure parts on the left and high pressure parts on the right. Just like they came out of the machine. But, maybe you have already got it up and running by now.......... pg
Reply:If you can rig up the diesel portable anything like most of the gas portables (I myself have an American IMC Pow'r Profile 10.3CFM@100 PSI 5 HP tecumseh) you'll need to get yourself a combo unloader/throttle control like this onehttp://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-unloader-val...3286.m20.l1116also a reserve tank and some way of mounting all this together.  Fan shroud/belt guard wouldn't be a bad idea either
