Hi thereI have sort of an odd request, but bear with me for a second. I'm looking for a particular pair of welding goggles: Fibre-Metal VG800-H5. They look like this: Now, they stopped making this model and color about 10 years ago, which is why I can't seem to find them at the usual safety and hardware sources.  I (and others like me) have pretty much exhausted all the usual channels which is why I'm turning to you guys.  If anyone has this pair of goggles (used or new) and is willing to sell them for a reasonable fee or even if you have any ideas on where I might find said goggles, I would be most grateful.I have a confession to make, I'm actually not a welder, but I'm looking for them as part of a costume, which is why it's important to me that they are the exact ones pictured above.  Some of you may have seen the online web show "Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog"  ( If you haven't, go watch it, it's funny, http://www.hulu.com/watch/28343/dr-h...ing-along-blog ) It just so happens that he wears this specific make and model of goggle with few modifications (some 'aging' to make it look like metal instead of plastic)Anyway, thank you in advance.
Reply:No one's seen these goggles then huh? :-/Well alright, thanks for your time and effort... : nods :
Reply:I used to have a pair many moons ago, but I haven't seen any lately either at my LWS.  http://www.fibre-metal.com/Fibre-Metal%20Catalog.pdfThey are still listed on page 21-22 of this catalogue.http://www.internationalsafety.com/P...ad-hearing.pdfHere also on page 31.http://www.pendergastsafety.com/inde...No=FIBVG800-H5http://www.discountsafetygear.com/we...cessories.htmlSmithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Unfortunately, I think it's more a case of their catalogue being out of date  a few people have contacted Fibre-Metal and they've confirmed they haven't looked like that in a while. However I don't think I've checked out International Safety yet, going to give that place a look, thanks for the lead. Pendergast and Discount Safety Gear we've checked already, and though initially it looked as though they had the correct goggles, it turned out they just had an old picture on their sites. (I suspect Fibre-Metal never issued a new one.) I guess the look of the goggles is not terribly important to welding, so understandably, no one said anything (although you'd think the number of vents would matter... the old ones have six and the new ones have four...I don't know, I just think that would be important to me if I were a welder...anyway... )(Pendergast, BTW was extremely rude...they wrote back to someone who had suggested they update their picture saying "I have sold 25,000 pair of those goggles to industrial users this year alone with out one complaint. I have had to take it down until this Dr. Horrible thing goes away, but in the meantime this strange Dr. Horrible thing is going to make us loose sales to real customers on this item. Please don't go away mad, just go away. Thank you" Customer service wise, I'm not sure I would recommend them for legitimate welding orders... just passing that along... On the other hand, Morton Safety has been nothing but helpful, even going out of their way to see if they can get these goggles even though they have relatively negligible profit to make from them... Based solely on customer service, I would recommend them highly... ... okay I'll get off my little soap box now..... tangent... sorry XD)Really though, thanks very much for looking into it BTW.. like your sig,  ehheehe...EDIT: In case you're wondering who this 'we' I keep referring to is... http://community.livejournal.com/drhorribledress/Last edited by Mlle; 08-09-2008 at 01:29 AM.
Reply:There's similar ones on e-bay.  It might be something that you'll have to keep an eye out for.

Reply:You're going to have to go across the pond to find them. [ame]http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gas-Welding-Goggles-Flip-Up-Lenses/dp/B000RA12TQ[/ame]http://www.justoffbase.co.uk/Gas-Wel...es-Sealey-SSP6http://www.thewelderswarehouse.com/W..._Goggles_.htmlLast edited by Sandy; 08-10-2008 at 12:43 AM.
Reply:LOL @ Denrep's comment@ MB_Welder: Yeah I've been keeping an eye on Ebay... there's this green pair with a similar shape and correct number of vents I have my eye on... probably going to go with those ones if I don't find these...@ Sandy: hmm those aren't bad, but I've seen pairs with about the same similarity over here (actually they might even be the same models, I'm not sure), so probably cheaper to go with those.Last edited by Mlle; 08-10-2008 at 01:18 AM.Reason: Sandy posted while I was writing the original post

Reply:I really never thought of welding safety gear as being even POTENTIALLY fashionable...I used the green brazing goggles made by fibremetal, our high school metals teacher got us those and the nerdy looking safety glasses back in the 1980s...you know the safety glasses, the Buddy Holly looking ones.http://www.phillips-safety.com/Glass...cs/70-F_lg.jpgSeems like we had to turn those back in, but I can't remember now.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:LOL clearly you've never heard of steampunk... just look up steampunk fashion in google images and see how many people wearing goggles there are XD
Reply:HAAH! Steam Punk...  Didn't he work on the New York Central?I forgot to check the goggle drawer!
Reply:This reminds me of a french movie I saw some years ago..."the city of the lost children"...Would this fit into the steampunk genre/fashion/culture/subculture/whatchamacalllit?http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3401227264/tt0112682Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I've had a slight prop interest for a long time.  Generally the common use I've seen for welding goggles online is their being converted into the goggles seen in ghostbusters...I love halloween, I built a ghostbusters pack from sheet metal last year for it based on the cartoon.  All the hotties at the bar wanted their pictures taken with me, it was great!   Catwoman was hot, but she had "Jailbait" written all over her...Plus, the girlfriend was there In a corset, so I couldn't really--you get the idea...It was rough, I swear!  I do need to buy new prescription safety glasses though, but on some random "bored outta my gord" ebay search, I found a pair of oldschool safety glasses.  They look REALLY uncomfortable!Up until I hulked out on my last computer (It got a virus, and I lost it! "Krug smash!"  *BOOM!*  Cleaned the dust off the lights downstairs!), I was addicted to a game called Arcanum.  It was steam-ish.  I dunno, I just liked running around with a gang of guys toting firearms and killing people and mugging them of their goodies... Suffice, when ya work late, there isn't much to do when you get off work!Last edited by mb_welder; 08-12-2008 at 08:47 AM.
Reply:Actually, on prop-related stuff,The general public won't care or even notice if you're 100% deadly accurate.  As long as it's close to what it's supposed to look like, it won't even matter!  It depends on the accuracy you're going for though, I suppose.  Worst case scenario, get a pair of similar green ones and paint them with an acrylic based silver or silver model paint.Last edited by mb_welder; 08-12-2008 at 09:04 AM.
Reply:Yeah, that's probably what I'm going to end up doing... But I figured, hey, they were made at some point not all that long ago, they must be out there somewhere so I might as well ask around. @ Smithboy:  I haven't seen that movie, but judging by it's description on Wikipedia, I would classify it as steampunk, yeah. (might have to check it out, it looks like a neat movie ) Generally, steampunk incorporates elements of19th century aesthetic to fictional or modern technology to get a sort of Jules Vern-ish look.@ mb_welder: Halloween is my favorite holiday... and that Ghostbuster costume sounds awesome, do you have any pics of it?
