My daughter was given a pumpkin at school by her teacher and was instructed to bring it back on Monday with wheels on it.  We decided to do it this way.I still need to paint it up, but here it is so far:The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:Beautiful build. In the original story, Cinderella had a gold carriage which turned into a pumpkin at the stroke of midnight. With any luck, this one will go the other way - starts out as a pumpkin, turns to gold at midnight......Keep a close eye on it. Hobbyist - At what point is a "hobby" out-of-control?
Reply:That would be awesome if it turned to gold.  I asked the color she wanted it painted and she said black, but now that you mention gold I may have to go and repaint it.  I think gold would look the best. The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:wow.you're daughter will be very proud..nice work..i love the details on the wheel
Reply:Ummm...was SHE supposed to come up with wheels? Kind of like when Dad builds the Pinewood Derby car? If the teacher was just asking for a nice display piece, it's a beauty.

Reply:I guess we all want to help all we can. While I insisted my son build the body of his Pinewood Derby car, I took the wheels and (nail) axles to work and spent my lunch hour truing the wheels, narrowing the load bearing surface slightly and micro-polishing the nails... err... axles. He finished fourth.
Reply:How did this help your daughter? Simply crushing the competition with dads help. If you would have posted it as a kitchen table piece I think it would have been a way cool awsome father and daughter project. But, a school competition amongst kids?  Since when is that considered fair? I get people all the time asking to help with projects like this, and my answer is, nope! It's good for you kids future self esteem too not always be the best. What do I know tho. I'm not a practicing christian spreading the word. Trust me. I don't mean to be rude bud. Do you get what I'm getting at?I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:Originally Posted by BD1I agree MIKE . When my son was in scouts there was a pine wood car derby race. Kids were to DO THE WORK. Yea, my son and I discussed it and HE DID it. Went to the derby and holy $hit ! Looked like these cars were machined !   The only winners were the ones that did the work on their own. This isn't even close to a pine wood derby.  It is a fun Halloween thing for school.  It is just for fun, no prizes or "competition" as you put it.  People are bringing back their creations to show them to every one else.  How does it help my daughter?  It helps her because when she asked for help I was there for her.  Today it is a pumpkin with wheels, tomorrow it will be the more serious things in life. When it comes to competitions, she is on her own and bounces ideas off Dad and Mom.  She does well enough on her own anyway.  She usually gets student of the month twice a school year.  I wish I had my head on as straight as her when I was a kid, and I turned out alright.  She will do just fine.I had my Dad help me with a pinewood derby car in my youth, and I honestly don't remember helping out with it.  What I do remember is that my Dad was there for me and that meant everything to me.  I don't believe kids who built cars should race them against cars built by the other kids' dads--that isn't fair.  But for a school project, as stated in the opening entry.....  comment #24 is a bit ridiculous.  I do understand your point, and can agree with it, but don't believe it applies to this project.Last edited by jdh239; 10-27-2013 at 11:35 PM.The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:You are definitely right. The parents just don't want to take the time for them. Too many parents pawn THEIR kids unto others.  It's not like it was in the old days. [ I'm 63 ] Todays parents are in too much of a hurry for whatever, too much high tech $hit, cell phones, etc.    The time you spend with your kids is too short. They grow too fast, believe me. My dad is still kickin at 88 and I visit him a few times a week. I still remember doing work with him and asking him for advice. Back then you couldn't go online, a library was the place to go.

Reply:I think this is an awesome project and GREAT time spent with your daughter. Who knows what she learned that will influence her interests and future vocation?I saw all the good and bad examples at the Pinewood Derby already mentioned, the over involved parents in other competitions, etc. I think the time you spend together is the real prize. I tried to spend time in Scouts, school, college, etc. and this week-end my oldest son and I rebuilt his deck, because we like to work together. Even now, I try to hold my opinion and let him do things his way so he will learn, like we did growing up, but offer a suggestion when asked. And his 4 year old wants to be right in there with us.Last edited by wb4rt; 10-28-2013 at 03:13 PM.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
