My first braai (BBQ)

Hi guysThis would be my first real post, I must admit that I am not a good welder, yet I find it highly enjoyable to be able to make something that could make life just a little more simpler for myself!This is my BBQ project, in South Africa we refer to it as "braai". My welds here are not great at all and the whole project needs to be taken down at some point to be sandblasted and I will give it a spray of high heat paint.Maybe someone could help me with the one thing I did completely screw up.. When I finally mounted the left side bracket, I used my level to get the position just right, marked my holes and when I finished drilling and finally mounted I realised it was off (lower than fire box) by about 10mm, problem im facing now is I cannot redrill the holes anymore as the size of the wallplugs are too large to be able to drill another hole in the same position?Well here is my project:
Reply:I couldn't read all of your text as it ran off the edge of the screen. But I figure your holes need to be in a different location. You could weld them up and grind flush, then re-drill. Or forget about bolting them and just put'em where you want and weld them on. Bring the whole thing to my place this weekend and I will give you a hand with it.

Reply:Hey Bistineau, wouldn't you (and I) be surprised if South African, wickus the braai welder was some eccentric self made multi billionaire software developer tinkering with welding and he hopped in his Lear Jet and tapped on your door and took you up on your offer down on the Bayou!If it happens take pictures and see if he can buy you a new welding machine.Some kind of Big Blue constant current welding machineAnother smaller yet, Blue machine (it's got wire in it)

Reply:I guess I'm dense (actually, I KNOW I'm dense) but I don't understand how this thing works.  You build a fire in the firebox, but cook on the grate on the side?  I Googled "braai" and only found conventional-looking BBQs.  Anyway, I'd be interested in seeing a pic of this one in operation, since I am vitally interested in pushing the envelope of BBQ technology.Tim
Reply:why did you paint it?  you need to burn all that paint off before cooking so you get rid of all the toxic fumes. Looks like you got a good start.

Reply:I believe the box is for generating the coals that will be used to cook with.  Cooking over burning wood tends to be a little nasty tasting in my opinion.  At least thats my explanation of the fire box.

Reply:Hi guys, thanks for the comments. The fireplace is outside but on our veranda. The box basicly just provides coals, its more convenient when using a large grid. You just keep adding wood and give it a nice knock when you need more coals and your fire keeps burning  I'll take some action pics sometime.. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
Reply:I like it. The craftsmanship looks good from my house. I think it is a pretty neat idea. I was wondering about the spacing of the bars in the firebox, but after wikus explanation in the previous post, the light bulb came on, lol.
