This is how I spent my lunch break today. I was asked by a friend to build a towel holder for a new jacuzzi, he didn't wanna screw hooks into his fence, so he asked me if I could make something free standing for him. He told me something simple, but I get carried away with everything so I decided to go a step above simple. This is gonna be the center bar for the rack. 1inch square bar. Should be finished by friday, i'll post a pic of the finished product, with a cleared over oil finish. I'm not that smart so these are always a brain tease for me  but I love doing them. Reply:That is VERY nice looking.  I can see where you twisted it, but how did you get the untwisted indentions into it?

Reply:What's your technique for that anyways? Weld one end to the table, heat the twisting portion to cherry and get a muscly armed teenager to twist for ya? Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.

Reply:I have done those before, they require more than brute force and ignorance.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Originally Posted by weldermikeMIKE, I wish it was that easy. The muscle part is one thing, but keeping it perfectly straght while your doing it is another. I did this in a vice with a homemade twisting bar, but the piece is 50in long so just imagine what wansts to happen when you heat the first few inches
Reply:If this is a nonpaying job for a friend as a favor, he should at least make the jacuzzi available to you when you want to use it. Nice job on the twisted towel bar, is the rest of the rack going to be done this way?

Reply:Got the towel rack all assembled today and got it all blued up and ready for the oil finish. I'll work on it some more tomorrow and post some pics of it finished. Here's a pic of what it looks like as of today. Attached ImagesI hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:Originally Posted by galencwiSo whats the tequnique to keep it straight while you twist it?   i havent tried that before but i know how easy it is to bend something when you have to twist it that much.
Reply:Originally Posted by weldermikeWater, patience, and screwing up a whole bunch of them until you get it down. LOL.,, Heat control is very critical. Heat, twist, cool, and move and make sure you never let go of the side with all the leverage on it, which is easy to forget when you gotta brush off the mill scale to see whats going on a couple of feet away from you.
Reply:Originally Posted by galencwidid you do more than one twist at a time or do you go by feel and the look of the metal?
Reply:Originally Posted by weldermikeWith the twists going into reverse twisting then counter reverse I would go 6in, then 3in and 3in then back to 6in. Give it a shot it is trickey. and flow of the twists is another story, with this piece I wanted them to flow into each other with the reverse twists in the middle, as oppsed to twisting straight up. Give it a try
Reply:Great, Mike took a nice piece of squre bar that never bothered anyone in it's life and made it all twisty, usually we try to make twisty stuff nice and squareAnyhow, nice job! Finish is nice as well.  I have twisted a few for personal projects and it takes a real knack to get them that well proportioned. They should love it when they see it. Reply:After blueing yesterday I finaly got a chance to work on the oil finish. I used beeswax and linseed oil, and gave it multiple coats baking it with a small rosebud in between coats. I'm gonna leave it till monday to cure then give it as many coats as I could get out of 2 cans of rustoleum matte clear. Its hard to tell in the pics, but the whole rack looks just like the base. I play around with different oil finishes, but this one is my favorite.  Attached ImagesI hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:HaHa yeah I know, that damn flash keeps going off and screwing up everything. You said puke, I was thinking diahrea! I left work early friday and that was the last coat before I baked it in some more. I'll post some pics on monday when it's finished. I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboyswould be easy to do something like that in say 1/2" for a shifter?tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:Finally got a chance to play around a little yesterday with the oil finish, coming out really nice. I have bright over head lights that really screw up close up pics, plus the flash on my phone, but here's a pic as of this morning. The base actually looks like a ceramic tile now. I gave it one more coat this afternoon, and now its starting to turn to the blackish side. I will accept a diahrea joke today, but I dont wanna hear anything from you pukesters  Attached ImagesI hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:Originally Posted by Rick VThat kind of discrimination (sh*ters vs pukesters) limits my freedom of expression!  Sure blame the overhead lights, the flash on your phone... then take a picture from so far away we can't make out any detail in the base... and have use believe it looks "like a ceramic tile".
Reply:Ok all you comedians, put another coat of oil on today, and baked that sucker up. Almost where I want it and ready for clear coat. Hopefully tomorrow. These pics still don't do it justice. If I back up two feet it turns BLACK! The lighting at the shop keeps Fn up the pics, but here's a few more. I blued this piece with a rosebud before I started the finish, and it's showing beautiful! Reply:Ok  got busy with other stuff so the finish took a little longer than I wanted, but as I promised, RICKV, this is for you. Here is the finished product, black from a few feet away, and beautiful marbelized tri color up close. Hope you guys like it I love this style of finish, all burnt oil!  I was actually real happy with it 3 coats ago, looked great, but shot my mouth off and promised black.
