Ok ive only welded clean clean SS and alum and inside a building. this time I was welding out and the steel was cleaned up but im guessing know where near enough.can I mig this steel if it looks like this ?
Reply:Don't tell anyone.. You can mig through millscale and even some oil.. If you are going to mig that grind the weld out, and since you have the grinder out clean up 1/2" past the weld.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:ok so mig can handle dirt a lot better does it just float to the top ?Yea I know this tig weld looks like crap but I plan on just a light clean up and leaving it but the rest of the welds looked like this I would go nuts.the weld is a 100% pen welded it just looks like hell I can see the inside as the thicker part is only 6 inchs long
Reply:It is difficult to Tig weld outside as you usually lose your shielding gas coverage. Tig doesn't like dirty metal either.

Reply:what's wrong with that weld? Buff it off with a wire wheel, tiger disc the sharp edges smooth, done. You ain't building a space shuttle, are you?If you clean that steel first those welds will look real niceLast edited by TimmyTIG; 08-04-2013 at 04:08 AM.
Reply:that weld doesn't look bad at all there's some millscale flakes caused by lack of coverage on the larger diameter but that's "normal", why would you mig over it?--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous

Reply:Originally Posted by Bigrich954rryea im going to clean it up a little with a flap disk and paint it so im not going mig over this weld. The weld came out a lot dirtier then im use to thinking cause im outside All the tig welds look stong just a little dirty.Reason im looking at a mig is to save time as I but I might try a larger cup and pick up a better grinder and maybe a box out around the weld with some thing to cut drop on air flow |
