I am looking at a Wiedemann Turret Punch Press #PH.41.P. I cant seem to find anything online referencing this machine. I punch 3/8 and 1/2 holes in 3/16 2x2 Angle and 2x1 Channel mild steel. I have 4000 holes I need to punch this weekend so Im kinda in a rush and this machine is all I can find locally.Anyone know anything about it? Will it work for me? My main concern is that the punch goes into a turntable.Any info will greatly be appreciated.

Reply:Usually these machines are for sheet metal, and dont have the tonnage to punch structural steel.But it depends on the machine.Does it list the tonnage anywhere on it?Here is a link to a tonnage calculator-http://www.conwaypress.com/calc_holePunch.htmlIt says you need a minimum of 9 tons to punch a 1/2" hole in 3/16".So if this is at least a 10 ton punch, it ought to do that- but for most structural stuff, you like to have a lot more- my ironworker is a 50 ton, and it will do a 1" hole in 1/2" plate. A lot of these sheet metal turret presses are 20 or 30 tons.The other thing to consider is punch clearance- structural punches, like ironworkers, have a much bigger gap between the punch and the die than a sheet metal punch/die combo would. So if this thing was used for sheet metal before, the punch clearance may be so tight that when you try to punch your 3/16", it munches the punch, as without sufficient clearance, there is no place for the metal to go.
Reply:As Ries said, watch your clearances. Not only the thickness but will you be able to get the hole in the right location in reference to the heel of the angle. As for the channel, unless the machine has a small anvil that will fit inside the web you're going to have to punch it flange up. In that case the clearance to the stripper will be an issue.....Mike |
