well i got a torch set off a buddy of mine and they are pretty old it's gonna be hard to get parts for it so i think i'm  gonna go up lowes and get a lincoln electric port a torch kitfor  300 bucks you get the tanks torch cutting tip welding tip gauges and carrying tote i'm working outta of my garage i'm not gonna be using my torch  everyday so  a kit likethat is perfect 4 me
Reply:I would get a victor set. Some can be had for $200 new and then just get a small set of bottles. But not portatorch small. Those things are worthless
Reply:The porta torch kit will only drive you nuts.  You will be filling those two tanks literally after about 5 minutes of use.  Those are designed more for maybe a lock smith that must cut off like ONE or TWO pad locks and where electricity isn't available to him, to use a cut off wheel etc... Do yourself a favor and visit your local welding supply or gas supply.  Look for a "small" torch set-up (larger than a porta-torch) that will suit you, but definitely avoid those "porta-torch" units.   They don't even supply enough gas to even begin to practice with.Last edited by SuperArc; 08-12-2013 at 02:19 PM.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:There are many great deals to be had on excellent used equipment from evilbay. Those small cylinders are useless for any real work."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Buy a used torch and reg setup (I wouldn't buy a reg used without a return policy or an in person test). I got mine off craigslist. I've found 2 for stupid cheap Then buy used tanks locally. If you intend to do any cutting, or any welding over 1/8, or use a heating (rosebud) tip, get at least a 80 cf fuel tank. Get the biggest oxy tank you can (probably the 200ish cf size). Acetylene is an unstable gas under pressure, and unlike other fuel gases, has a limit on how quickly you can use it from the bottle. The size of the bottle determines the limit. I originally bought B size tanks (40cf), and quickly found out that I couldn't even use the smallest cutting tip for my torch (Harris 85 same as a porta torch rig), or any welding tip bigger than #3 (1/8" steel welding size). Google acetylene 1/7 rule for more info.

Reply:While that might be true, those little MC cylinders don't last long at all. I don't even bother with my little MC cylinder even for soldering pipes. I grab the "B" cylinder instead. Even that I can run down pretty quick just doing a few soldering jobs.Note that the CGA fitting for the MC cylinder is different than that for the larger "B" size, and that is different than the ones typically found on 75 cf and larger cylinders. When you need to upgrade, you will be stuck using clunky adapters or buying a new reg or having the fittings swapped out. Those MC cylinders have a very narrow usefulness..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:Check craigslist.  You will be amazed at what comes up.  I got a nice real sturdy old Airco torch with full tanks, newly rebuilt 2-stage regulators, and a boatload of cutting and welding tips for $300.  The guy I bought it from also threw in a couple old welding jackets, some gloves, goggles, brazing and filler rod, and an old Jackson helmet with a gold lens, and when I told him I had a stick welder a pile of stick welding rod as well.Lincoln AC-225 TombstoneAirco 800 Torch w/ 2-stage regs
