Hello all i am new to this forum, i have read some of the posts and saw they were very useful. I've just started a TIG class . I've read that they make glass or pyrex cups for TIG torches... I have a weldcraft wp17f torch and can't seem to find and glass cups for it do they exist?  Do they come in different sizes like alumina cups?
Reply:seen pictures of them, but I've never seen anybody actually weld with one.  I think they'd tend to be more fragile than the alumina cups...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Thanks for the replys. I've read the advantages to gas lenes... Is there a different style or method when running a gas lenes? most of the pyrex cups i've seen are for gas lenes setups i usually use a 6 cup but i havent seen a pyrex 6 cup.
Reply:No different style or method from a torch manipulation standpoint (though walking the cup can get tricky).  You may see require a different argon CFH depending on the setup.
Reply:My personal experience with a Pyrex cup was less than scintillating.I found that the arc was so bright that I had a hard time seeing the seam I was trying to weld. This was especially noticeable at low amps welding thin material. The other day the Pyrex cup rolled onto the floor and shattered. I put a gas lens and alumina cup on the torch and was amazed at how much easier it was to see things.Maybe it's my Ol' Geezer eyes. I'm gonna stick with alumina cups from now on.YMMVRex
Reply:You gotta try teflon.  drop your torch, no worries Attached Images
Reply:where can i get those? very interesting
Reply:I have had a few pyrex cups.  They all eventually broke.   After you use them for awhile, you can't see though them anymore and the clear view benefit is gone, that is if you can keep from breaking it long enough to reach that point.  I don't use them anymore.   The ceramic ones work fine for me. I always use a gas lens.  The small gas lenses work great.  I bought one of the monster ones and found it wasted more gas than it saved, so I dont use it anymore.I like that teflon idea.  I'll  have to try one of those some day.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Teflon cups are made in house.  I don't know of any retail versions.  Easy to make on a lathe.
Reply:how much heat will they take amperage wise?
Reply:Don't know.  I never tested that.  Most of my welds when I use it stay under 100 amps.  It may take more.  I'll do a little test today and see.
Reply:You may have a product worth selling on your hands..... ;-)
Reply:CK sells the pyrox cups I use them once in a while. Fragile YES, expensive YES and I find take alot more GPM. B.J.
Reply:I don't think that cup is teflon... It looks like a Champagne 2 nozzle (they suck). The CK gas saver large 1-1/8" pyrex cup works very well but it's rarely ever necissary or even helpful compared to a #8 gas lens cup. It's so cumbersome it's annoying to use... and being able to see through the cup doesn't help you learn or anything. Don't waste your money.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:I'm far from a pro, very far.I was gonna buy the Pyrex setup when I started.   Seems like it will give you an edge to do better. After you tig for a bit, you'll come to realize that you never look at the area that he Pyrex cup would allow you to see.  Your looking at the puddle which is below the tungsten tip.  It seems like a total scam.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:Gimick, save your money. The weld is at the end of the tungsten. The light is coming from the end of the tungsten. What you want to weld is at the end of the tungstenNot on the collet body...Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Yeah I can't see any real use for them?  I have done some of my best welds with a standard cup as long as everything is set up correctly and no cross winds.......  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:I have used the ones from HTP. I like them. Yes it makes things brighter but that's why we have adjustable shade helmets. Yes they are more fragile but that's what a torch holder is for. What you guys aren't seeing is that the Pyrex cup is ALSO a gas lens setup. Reply:Originally Posted by Drf255Yes, it's a lens, but it costs $50.  I can buy 20 gas lenses and cups for the same price.
Reply:I had an instructor who bought a #7 pyrex cup. He said he was always distracted looking at the pretty light instead of watching the puddle. Biggest waste of money was his opinion. I haven't used one but I tend to agree. Ceramic works just fine. They ordered us a setup of Pyrex cups in all different sizes to try at work.  They sit on a shelf in a case cause no one uses them. I didn't care for it
Reply:First time I welded with a Pyrex cup I tried walking the cup...........no good............damn thing melted. They are good for different applications!!!
