Scored this cylinder on a job today it might make a good cylinder for a shop press needs new seals.
Reply:Nice. How long is it? Are you thinking you'll build it horizontal or vertical? It would also make a great fence rail splitter.
Reply:A local friend has a press I absolutely drool over. It's a big (and I mean !!BIG!!) C frame press. The frame is built with heavy I beams, and the cylinder shaft is probably 4" diameter, cylinder maybe 10", not sure exactly how many tons. But it can easily bend 1" plate with a fairly narrow anvil spacing. It's probably at least 12' tall with a longish ram, maybe 2' of stroke. I've borrowed it a few times when my 50T H frame didn't cut it, usually because things physically didn't fit in it. If I had the cylinder, pump, valve, and (most importantly) space (and ceiling height); that's what I would build.
Reply:You might want to check the weld on the blind end of the cylinder real close. They tend to crack there.

Reply:Originally Posted by forhireAny idea what pressures this cylinder is rated for? My press runs 5000 psi, well above the 2 to 3 thousand psi of a typical hydraulic system. I suspect a bailer likely runs in the 2 to 2.5 range so it can cycle quickly and likely produces around 20 to 30 ton. If you ran it on your press you'd be around 40 ton at 3000 psi. If I did my math right. Of course if you over pressure the cylinder you'll likely bend the long rod. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
Reply:Got these of a couple of Leach rubbish packers. They were working and had no leaks 6 inch bores
Reply:If 5`6`` is too long why don't you shorten-it, it's quite easy and you might end up with half the parts required to build a second one. with 39 theoritical tons i bend easily 1/4 x 6 or 3/16 x 12 on a 2 inch wide angle iron (reinforced of course). |
