Put this together this morning, nice to be working outside on such a nice day. Some mig and vertical down 6010. Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk Attached Images
Reply:I would have put it just above floor height..But that's just me.It'll work....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Was where the owner wanted it. Had a winch that fits in a cradle pretty slick set up for loading cars. Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk
Reply:I did mine very similar to that, but near floor height.  My winch, which is mounted in a theft and impact resistant cardle/cage, has a 2" mount flush with the bottom on the back side.  It slides in on front or rear of my K5-1T, the rear of my 2500HD, or the front of the trailer.  And I have high amp snap together couplers to make moving it even easier.  Speaking of "easy", with 100' of stainless 10k cable on is (with hardware), moving it alone is anything but easy.  One of these days I really have to get around to replacing that with braded rope. And the best things is, I've got other things that fit in those receivers.  A heavy 20k clevis, hook, vise stand, rotating military pintle hitch, gear carrying shelves, and adapters that let me mount any of my receiver based tool mounts (multiple benders, bead roller, grinders, etc).  I have plans to provide a similar mount for small lifting crane, and maybe a light duty lift gate sort of thing like they use for elderly "hoveround" carriage.  A solid hitch is such a nice thing to have...
Reply:should do ok. but I would have brought something down at an angle from the top of the "stand" to further forward on the tongue, just for added strength. Gussets work better in compression than tension, but it's better than nothing at all. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:[Gussets work better in compression than tension, but it's better than nothing at all.[/QUOTE]Why do you say this? Seems like it would be the other way.

Reply:the simplest answer I could find online.http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_compre...ngth_in_a_beambasically, as compressive force acts on an object the cross sections get's bigger thus reducing the load. a tension force reduces the cross section thus increasing the load in the reduced cross section. in the case of something buckling, the forces weren't uniform on the section getting compressed causing the weak direction to fail. a twisting force for example, would cause this. Remember, in a proper weld the weld itself is generally stronger than the material around it so you need to expect the material to fail first not the weld.Last edited by ThorsHammer; 11-04-2013 at 03:54 PM.There are no problems. Reply:When a piece like this fails, it is usually a combination of factors that contributes to failure.  A gusset as required in this thread would be plenty strong and would not fail.  If the gusset were on the compression side and was loaded enough, it could fail by folding.
Reply:only if the gusset used was not the proper size for the job. if that was the case it would have been pointless to do in the first place. but if he uses the same tubing stock that he used for the vertical the chances of the gusset buckling before the winch or cable breaks are slim to none. There are no problems. Reply:This would be my thought too, I just thought there might be some engineering formula that says I've been wrong or something.
Reply:I assumed the gusset would be flat.  Sorry.
Reply:Almost any gusset going forward would interfere with the jack. If he plans on just loading cars on wheels, he'll be fine.Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"
Reply:Ok, I see what you mean, but it takes more material to brace the compression side than to gusset the tension side. It would take an angle, tube, or beam of some sort on the compression side but a flat will work on the tension side.
Reply:I've done one of those before.  I'm with zap, it would be preferable to put it right above floor height, but to each his own.  Not only is it a better pull, it allows the winch to fit up under the nose of longer loads (or a under the back of a car loaded backwards, for instance). This was a quick throw together for a relative's 18' Big Tex one day.  Plates are just some 3/16 drops.  Would have been nice to clean it up a bit more - maybe the doubler around the end of the tube, but this is what we had time for.  It's not going to fall off.Last edited by bassboy1; 11-13-2013 at 12:01 AM.Who is John Galt?
Reply:Very nicely done. Too often you see folks use far too much material for the job for no good reason. Both of these were well done. On this one a top plate on the gusset would have kept the dirt out of the valley but wasn't necessary for strength.
Reply:Now that one I love. but I wouldn't have put the top plate on. just a place to capture water and dirt. this way it can be cleaned out and dry out. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Top plate would have meant that the inside couldn't have been painted.  Maybe not an issue on a car hauler, but most of my experience is on boat trailers, where that is a big concern.  The tops of the 3/16 plate were given a full radius.Who is John Galt?
Reply:Here is mine I put on my gooseneck tilt. I made it a bolt together because I didn't want to grind off the powder coating. If I can figure out how to upload some pics
