I am looking to buy a large lot (possibly 3 to 4 hundred feet) of 1/8" or 1/4" steel rod. Nothing fancy, just plain rod. What should a person be paying a foot for something like this, Sorry in advance if I posted in wrong forum.
Reply:In what lengths? Mild steel, Hot rolled or cold? Hot may be cheaper, cold may be more uniform in diameter. Most of the mild steel I have been buying has been priced at an average of $1/lb. Some shapes as low as 0.75/lb, some as high as $1.25/lb. But I buy in rather small quantities - about 300 lbs per average order. Here is an on-line vendor pricing for 1/4" A-36 Hot: http://www.speedymetals.com/ps-4225-...led-steel.aspxI have no idea how these prices compare to any other vendors, but I hope this helps-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:If I did the math right 1/4" round A-36 is about 0.1669 lbs/ft. 350 ft x 0.1669 = 58.415 lbs. 1/8" rod will be half that for the same linear quantity.-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:I haven't seen many steel suppliers lurking here.I would be looking in the yellow pages. Steel, like all commodity's are based on supply and demand. Shipping might have something to do with it as well.So I got to ask why come here to ask that question? You only get the price of some guy you don't know telling you the price he gets.

Reply:As stated above, you will get pricing that will be all over the board! You might try looking for a discount dealer, we have one hear that sells any and all shapes and sizes at one price! He sells stuff that may have a touch of rust or was an end run or bought from overstock, its all new never used steel, and his price right now is .35 a lb.So using Mondo's figures above, the 1/4 would cost us here at his place about $20.30 for the whole lot of 1/4 that you need, if you want first quality steel, he sells his top quality stuff for .45 a lb, so it would be $26.10 for the lot of 1/4.He does have quantity pricing as well, but like Mondo, I usually don't by more than 500 to 1000 lbs at a time, so I can't say first hand what that pricing is!So, my advice to you is get your phone book out and do some searching!Ken.P,SFor anyone that lives near the north eastern part of Indiana, that is wondering where I get my steel, its a place called C, Henry steel, they are on Winter st in Fort Wayne, Indiana, you should be able to find their number by googling them, if not, email me and I will send it to you!And no, I am not affiliated with C, Henry, I just like to help them out as they have given me breaks at times when I didn't bring enough money, and besides, the more people that buy from them today insures that they will still be here tomorrow.#1.
