Buying a used Tombstone...

I'm looking for a stick welder for my shop use so I don't have to back my truck up to the door and use my Bobcat all the time. I'm going deaf listening to that thing. Would you buy a Lincoln tombstone that you couldn't weld with before buying ? Them little fellas are pretty bulletproof reliable aren't they ? I've seen some at garage sales that couldn't be tested and I have seen them with missing leads. Reply:I learned on the Lincoln 225 tombstone.  My dad bought his around 40yrs ago and it is still around to this day and works like it did when new.  I wouldnt hessitate to buy another if I had to.  Unless, it was used and I could not try it out before using it.  Exception would be if the person selling it would give you a written guarentee that you could return it for full refund if it didnt work when you got it home.  Or do this, bring your Bobcat to where the machine is and run it off the full output plug of the Bobcat.  You probably will need to make an adapter to get from the Lincoln's 6-50P to the Bobcat's 14-50R.  Good luck, hope it works out for you.A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A

Reply:I found one on Craigs list, went to pick it up and the power cord had been cut off at about 5 ft long.  The cord was 4 conductor #8 (of course only 3 conductors were used) so it obvously had once had a rather long cord.  The machine was covered with dirt and dust, had new leads and one of the solid copper Tweco work clamps.  It belonged to a guy who runs a welding rig and he "only used the old Lincoln for home (farm) projects".  I took a chance on it anyway and it works fine, well worth the $100 I paid.I did not test this one until I had taken the cover off, cleaned it up and replaced the power cord, but I'm sure all it really needed was a plug installed on the that fat power cord and it would have fired right up.Larry "I feel for the man who cannot spell a word more than one way."  by Mark TwainLincoln AC225-SLincoln Weldpac 100 Miller Matic 180 (auto set)Miller Spectrum 375 ExtremeMiller Spoolmate 100Victor Super Range II
