Opinions on this fix

just wondering what some of you guys thoughts are on fixing this crack. its for a piece of tillage equipment on the farm. im thinking it will need more than tighten the gap up and weld. I was thinking possibly a piece of angle iron underneath with a notch cut out allowing it to fit around the round tube axle. what do some of you guys think? that crack wraps up around part of the opposite side too this is a view from the top, the crack is on the bottom more soR.T. Reply:Pulled together, vee'd or cut for a full penetration weld. Then the best thing that can be done is to plate the end of the tube. Reply:The round is it tube or solid shaft?  Angle iron would help. As posted earlier vee and weld. But be careful we had one similar and tube cracked and separated from rectangle tube.You could pull the wheel hub & keeper bolt hole saw a hole in a piece of 3/8 or so plate and weld to the side after repairing the crack. Could also put a small gusset on back side. Just depends on how much work you want to do. Good luck

Reply:I did what weldone stated about hole saw in plate and the cap end of tube on a neighbors digger years ago. Worked well. I did the other wheel too .

Reply:Just curious...but can the axle be moved a couple inches further down the tube into "fresh meat" without causing any functional issues? Reply:I have fixed several wheels for farmers over the years and this is what I did and so for never had to repair them again. If you have time, remove (first pic, look to the left and you will see the bolt) the bolt going through the axle.  You will probably have to heat the shaft to remove it. After you remove the wheel and shaft, repair the crack, then cut a plate and reinforce the 2"X 4" tubing.
