Cutting a slot in pipe

I to cut a  5/16 slot in steel pipe about 10" down the length. I have a Drill press with a compound slid table. any one have any thoughts

Reply:if the table is functional i would use a 5/16 end mill and leave the cutoff wheel in my toolbox

Reply:i you use a drillpress for a mill it won't be very long before the chuck comes loose from the taper and get throw across the shop.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:I know it sounds good, but never use a drill press for millingDrill press has a Morse Taper arbor meant for vertical pressure, not axial pressure.  SAme with the bearings in the head.The cross slide table is just for convenience in aligning drilling points, not for machining."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Since you have a cross slide table on the drill press, you should chain drill the slot.If you want a 5/16th slot, start with a 1/4" drill bit and drill a chain of holes that are just shy of touching each other. Once you have the chain of holes done, use a grinder to knock out the small webs between the holes and finish to your desired size.Unless your drill press has a drawbar, forget about trying to mill the slot......it's too dangerous.RexLast edited by rode2rouen; 11-21-2009 at 09:46 AM.Reason: speelage
