This was a pipe used as a fence post on my property here in South Carolina.  It has YOUNGSTOWN in raised letters at 3' intervals.  I thought this was rather unique.  I'm guessing this is from Youngstown, Ohio.  Was this a common way to mark pipe at one time, or did this pipe maybe have some special intended use?  -LukeMiller Thunderbolt1966 F-350 FlatbedBelarus 250AS TractorMy Youtube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/user/hardingluke01
Reply:I've seen beams roll marked that way from Bethlehem Steel in the past. I've also seen old railway rail roll marked with the manufacturers name as well..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Ok, thanks.  I think the lettering looks cool.  I'm going to find a use for it where it will be seen.Miller Thunderbolt1966 F-350 FlatbedBelarus 250AS TractorMy Youtube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/user/hardingluke01

Reply:Very cool! Could have been from the old Ytown sheet and tube, one of the bigger companies in our area (im a proud Youngstown native) during the hayday of the steel industry.  Theres still some steel making activity here, nothing like there used to be though...
Reply:My family is from youngstown... I was actually born there, but moved shortly after. pretty neat. My Great Grandfather worked in the steel mills back in the day- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com
Reply:I've seen a lot of old pipe marked like this, mostly cast pipe though, most old beams will also be roll-marked with the manufacturer as well as many old castings.
Reply:No doubt from Youngstown sheet and tube. There's a group that is making a museum of sorts, and preserving a steam engine from Y'town, among other things.  The guy behind the effort seems to have a knack for collecting very heavy things. http://todengine.blogspot.com/"...The Tod Engine Heritage Park is Youngstown's newest historic attraction! The centerpiece of the Park is the Tod Engine, a 260 ton, 4,000 horsepower stationary steam engine which drove rolling mills at the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Brier Hill Works....""USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Camjeep, my great grandfather worked at sheet and tube also, boilermaker, my dad is a millwright foreman in the french owned mill that now occupies the old S and  T briar hill works, i also worked there the summer after i graduated from high school. The Tod Engine project is very cool, its great to see someone is working hard to preserve our steel making heritage.  We have a museum here in town dedicated to the history of the steel industry, i think they just call it the steel museum, Youngstown state university runs it.  Its a beautiful facility, check it out they maybe able to provide more info on the op pipe in question.
