I am preparing to buy a new hypertherm unit. I have used the powermax 30 numerous times and as far as needing a powermax 45 for cutting thicker material is not really an issue for me. However I would like to have a machine with the cleanest, nicest cut. If I get the powermax 45 will the cut be better in 3/16 to 1/4 steel than the powermax 30 or am I just wasting money on the 45?
Reply:Yes, because you can dial the machine up to 40 amps and more.I would get both.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Get the PM 45.  You can't use the amps you didn't buy and you don't know what the future holds.  Plus the 45 has an expanded metal and gouging option that the 30 doesn't.  You can use the PM30 consumables on the 45 for finer cuts on thinner materials.  They also make "fine cut" consumables, but I can't remember right now what the intricacies of them are. You can get the PM45 manual online and figure it all out. When I was buying my PM30, they were out of them and only had the 45's in stock. The seller threw in a bunch of consumables for me to sweeten the deal. I'm really happy I went with the 45.  I get the cut precision of the 30 on thin stuff and have cut 1.25" bar at times.Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk - now FreeTA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:I don't think the 30 will gouge,  I found, 40-45amps is about the bare minimum to do any gouging with. 60 amps and up rocks at gouging.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
