Had a few chrome plated rollers to finish the finish on..Used a homemade by Me toolpost sander with a 60 grit cloth belt for the job..Seems a bit coarse for "Polishing"..But chrome is extremely HARD..All chrome is .020 thick..Roller on floor..Not the one in the machine..Compound removed..Homemade belt sander..The operation..The finish..The bottom wheel must "Contact" the roller or else the belt would just "glide" over the chrome and not do anything if the belt was in the middle of the wheels..Chuck running in reverse and the belt spins the opposite way..Easy enough to do but CAUTION!!!!You DO NOT want to breathe in the dust..Tastes terrible.I get all the fun jobs.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thats how you do that.....never seen one of them fancy tool post sander/grinder thingys all set up and running. Didn`t realize the chrome was always so thick as well. Very Cool!
Reply:Not all chrome plated parts are .020 thick..This particular job called for .020 on all the rollers since they are used in the sand and gravel part of asphault shingles..It's whatever it calls for on the print..The more the merrier I guess..Sometimes on the bigger stuff we will use the Cylindrical Grinder but these are small enough that they can be done in this fashion opposed to the cost of setting up and running the grinder.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:its really cool man ... never seen that before .... i would also like to try this of my own ....GREAT work .....steel bar steel supplier
Reply:were you trying to get a brushed chrome look? I have done it with a 220 fine grit for a really fine brushed chrome look. To get the scratches out of chrome I use 220 at 1st followed by 400 or 600grit then polish on buffing wheel with Jewelers rouge come out looking like a mirror. That is how I polish up hydraulic cylinder pistons/rods that are pitted or scratched..Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:Originally Posted by zapsterSomething that precise would be done in the grinder..For this it's more of the getting the raw finish off it..Fresh industrial chrome plating is not smooth by no means...Not in this application anyway..And sand and grit 24-7 abuse is very harsh on things..They are usually toast in 8 to 9 months......zap!
Reply:By the way Zap that is one slick looking sanding setup that you have there.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:would it work any better if you used a "lube" of some sort on the sanding belt?  Or would the sanding belt just load up with lube & not cut?Just curious.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
