Amber lens

I have a question. Are amber lenses the same as gold lenses? I heard a shade in gold is the equivalent to one shade lighter in green. Is this true? Where do you find these? Does brand matter? If so how? Reply:No.  Gold lenses are fixed shade lenses with a coating of gold.  Amber lenses can be either fixed shade or auto, and have a somewhat similar shade of puddle to a gold lens, but most think that the clarity of a fixed gold lens is about as good as you can get.  The auto darkening amber lenses are chosen by some that need the utility of an auto darkening but do not like the greenish tint of many auto darkening lenses.  The high end Jackson Nexgen lenses have an amber puddle color.If you're looking for a gold lens, the Phillips Safety Shott glass coated gold lenses are very clear; you can also get plastic gold coated lenses at almost any welding supplier, but they are more succeptable to scratching and not quite as clear...
Reply:Yeah, I would not say gold has a lighter shade, but I would say they show a broader color spectrum than the others.What I will say I that my Shott gold #10 is startlingly bright and clear. Reply:I got a cheap Hobart gold from Northern Tool. Best purchase (almost) ever. I can't stand the green lenses.They aren't very expensive. Mine was only around $5, but they can be had for anywhere between 5-20$.You can order them online from Phillips Safety I believe.

Reply:Another +1 for the Philips gold coated Glass.  I tried a few different brand plastic ones and they all had some sort of internal reflection causing me to see a multiple tungstens.  The Philips isn't as amber as the plastics but there is no contest that its better.There are a few SpeedGlas helmets and a Jackson NexGen in the lab at school and I usually pick up my #10 gold from Philips when I'm TIGing.~Alex
Reply:I find the multiple view of tungstens or wire is usually from the cover lens being to far from the tinted one, especially on a helmet with a flip up safety lens. I used to have a expensive glass gold lens, but havent seen it for a while.  You have to make sure the cover is always on good, spatter will stick to glass, but not as much on plastic.
Reply:I tried the gold plated plastic lens by itsself in the helmet and had the same issue, passed it off to the boss and he saw the same thing.  Could have been a bad batch.   I am very happy with my gold coated glass lens from Philips.  The plastic ones were "usable" but the reflections did get annoying.~Alex
