I burned a lot of 5/32 7018 doing structural and a pile of 1/8 309L rod inside the furnace. In the industrial world, stick is far from obsolete.

Reply:Human nature says that a lot of people view the entire world thru a narrow lens of their own limited personal experience.A lot of folks happily tig small parts for decades sitting at a bench in a climate controled environment, others weld at 200' with a flux core feeder, others mig in a production environment or stick weld out in the mountains. Some people do a lot of different welding in a variety of circumstances. Like I've said about 4,376 times, it's a big old welding world out there. We'll know that stick is receeding when Lincoln stops selling 200D's for $13,000 as fast as they can make them. Somebody is using those machines to feed the kids. And 300D's and SAE300's and Vantages plus more I'm not familiar with.So really, to a kid pulling the trigger on a mig gun in a trailer manufacturing plant really might believe it. Then there's the maintenance welders (millions of them) who might be running stainless in the morning, LoHi before lunch, 99 cast iron after lunch and a little hard facing before going home. Plus the farmers fixing their stuff outside. Position pipe changes everything where the welder makes manual adaptation all day long, easy with stick. On and on it could go but Lincoln and Miller are still selling high dollar stick machines and that pretty much tells the tale. It's harder to brown corn than I originally thought.J

Reply:Stick welding really was obsolete in the early '60's (fiddy years ago) or even earlier in some sectors. Happily living on in others. Just depends on where you make your living.Blanket statements rarely are absolutely correct. The corn turned out OK, not great but alrite for a wannabe like me. In my defense, I can brown corn on the cob on a grill to stupendous goodness and have for a long time, this stove cooking befudles me at times. It kept us alive till breakfast tho.J

Reply:Arc welders are not obsolete. Lots of people are told that and so they buy a MIG or TIG, but arc welding with a stick machine is a basic art that should be mastered by people who want the complete welding experience. I have a stick section in my Syncrowave and I also have an AC/DC Lincoln Tombstone. Both of them will do a beautiful bead with proper attention. When I was in my welding school about 20 years ago, we had to do horizontal, vertical up, vertical down and overhead with stick. That's the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I love stick welding and there are certain jobs where it's really good, like making some nice large beads really fast and cheap without gas. That's a good point....arc welding doesn't need any gas and it's fast. Did you ever run out of gas on a Saturday night and still need to weld something? Break out the stick welder. Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauYour wrong on that point. I still need gas to stick weld, I got an engine drive. Won't run without gas, but then it's usually pretty easy to get on a Saturday or even a Sunday around these parts. Unless it's late night, but then I don't do late night welding either. By then I have soaked up enough beer I don't need to be striking an arc anyway.

Reply:Well the term arc welder is pretty broad indeed so unless he is doing things with O/A or ultrasonic or laser/ electron beam or friction i don't get his point those don't arc weld but are all specialty machines and cost big bucks in most cases not anything your going to weld your car up with or even have as a hobby welder and probably not even in most shopsArc welding in the sense of my setup is i would not weld body panels with SMAW i plug in the wire feeder and the gas bottle and GMAW or i could GTAWIf it's something heavy duty that needs to be fixed i sometimes CAG then SMAW and if it is big enough to require a lot of welding i get out the wire feeder and FCAWThe commonality of all those different process is the A..i think the AWS changed the designations back in the 90's maybe earlier but the A in Arc in the bases of all those processes And i don't see any of them as being obsolete ..Just MHOBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ??
