This may be a stupid idea but I was wondering if anyone would be interested in something like a weekly weld challenge? ( or what ever you would want to call it challenge may not be the right thing to call it)The idea behind this would be to help those of us that are learning see what a proper weld type looks like so we could compare. Here is how i was thinking it could work.  Someone would post the challenge for the week. It would be something that almost all of use could do with scrap and little time. Such as a 3" lap joint using 1/8 steel. Everyone that is doing the challenge would then post a pic of the result and the settings used.
Reply:Are we going to draft fantasy welding teams, have team brackets, etc.? What is the prize? I'm drafting Zapster, and . . .Just kidding. I, for one, think that could be fun. Or after a few weeks of basic stuff, have a challenge like my son's class at GaTech. The professor would hand out projects like "Has to have a 1 sf footprint or smaller, has to be coin operated, no batteries or solar power, has to complete 3 operations, and can only be powered by gravity or a mouse trap."It was pretty amazing what those guys came up with to meet the requirements. Are we going to at least have a Pro division, a Hobby division, and a newby division?Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com

Reply:If you want a simple project, look at this and see if it would be a good first challenge. It is very simple, takes little material, and there are a lot of variations that could be done. Could be steel or aluminum, MIG, TIG, or STICK.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=299611Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com

Reply:Ok, as Dave said, everybody get back on track.Seems like there is plenty of interest and I say it is up to Tstryker to declare the first week's challenge. He had a great idea to start with the basics so let's all back up to a lap joint or fillet weld or something. As the weeks progress, we can do more complex projects. As Tstryker said, then this thread could be a sort of workbook for newby's.My suggestion is to get one of the Mods to create a new Sticky thread and let Tstryker post the challenge.Agree?Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com

Reply:iam down for the pressure vessel challenge! just passed 10 xray joints on an 8"  w/ 1-1/2" wall hastalloy all out of position. Another 4 joints to go yet!

Reply:Awesome Idea, Sounds like fun.  Select a judge for the week, a challenge, and a deadline.. Should be left simple so more people can join in.  I couldn't build a pressure vessel if I tried, it might hold a fart for a few minutes but that's about it.  Simple = Fun = Somewhat Educational...For Example: an 8" lap weld on 14-16 gauge sheet metal (mild steel) with 3/32" 6013 DC-.Or:  an 8" fillet weld on 14-16 gauge sheet metal (mild steel), stick welding only, any polarity. That would be fun and difficult for some of us, and easy for most of you guys.  I know I suck at stick welding sheet metal, but I would enter my ****ty weld into the contest because I have that equipment and it would only take a few minutes to do..to the victor go the spoils I know I'll be pissed when I see **** like this.. Cuz I will know I have lost.... Attached ImagesLast edited by Plowboy; 10-03-2013 at 09:53 AM.Lincoln Weldanpower AC/DCLincoln LN-25Miller WC-115a Miller Spoolmatic 30aCheck out my youtube TV Channel
Reply:This has to be something everyone can be part of...Some may be good at stick. Some TIG..Some MIG...You get the picture....We all do different stuff at different times with a major degree of difficulty thrown in for laffs...We as a community need to think of something fair to all that participate..Can this actually be made fair?I am not making this decision... you guys are...This should be good and get everyone involved at some stage so lets make it a fair competition for everyone..Sorta like bracket racing..."You can't out dollar me....you gotta out drive me"...Someone with basic stuff can out weld anyone.Lets roll!.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:How about a steel .25" lap/T joint? Mig Tig or Stick. Single or Multi pass. Pictures of each pass for grading, no wire brush/wheel so we can see the colors of the steel. Must be a full .25" weld (or as close as you can get). Could enter any or all welding processes if you want. Its not easy to think of something everyone can do  Seems most of have some .25" around so it should be something most could participate in.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:I'm more interested in participation than "winning". If I do my best and then can compare to others from newby to pro, I believe I can learn what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong and recognize how my skills compare. Not sure if there needs to be a bracket or weld-off to determine the winner, I'm pretty sure the people who read and see the results will know who the winner(s) are.I agree with grouping by process- MIG, TIG, or STICK, but also by Newby, Intermediate, and Pro.Whatever works for me, let's just get it started!Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
