whats a good tig welder to do bike frames, atv frames, aluminum, i wanna try building my own bike frame. looking for a nicer miller tig welder. If the conversation isn’t money, then I’ll see you later.
Reply:Nice AC/DC Miller says either a Syncrowave, or a Dynasty depending on your budget. If you want to look used, then I'd look for a lightly used Syncrowave 180 or 200. You should be able to get one in the $900-1300 range. The Syncrowave 250's run a bit more usually but several guys have found some sweet deals on a few lately.Dynasty 200's are a bit harder to find used. Be cautious, I've seen a lot of CL and Ebay scams for these. Go expecting them to show it to you physically and weld with it. If not, chances are it's some sort of scam. New expect to shell out close to $4K complete, about 2x what a new Syncrowave 200 would run you. If money was no object I'd go with a Dynasty 200.Other nice budget units are the Thermal Arc 185's if you can find a nice used one. Not that familiar with their newer units. Same goes with the Lincolns. They make nice machines, but I'm not as familiar with them as I am the Millers..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:so a 200 syncrowave will do aluminum and metal??? im looking at used also kinda on a college budgetIf the conversation isn’t money, then I’ll see you later.
Reply:Yes. That's why I bought my Syncrowave 200 originally. I wanted a decent machine that I could learn to weld alum on..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Moe,   You've got a long journey ahead of you.  Head on over to the frame building forum on MTBR, read up.  You'll learn such things as why its NOT advisable for a do-it-yourself builder to make first frame in aluminum, best materials, fixtures, etc.   lots of discussion over there on TIG machines, etc..  http://forums.mtbr.com/frame-building/Do read up on the WWTP build.  (Walt Works Tubing Project)  Walt of Walt Works offered up a free set of bicycle frame tubing to a newby first time builder, as long as he documented the entire build process for all to see. Jay Clarke (jay_ntwr) did a great job documenting the build with photos.  Oh. and on the path for your new TIG welder.. although you'd likely be building your first bicycle frame out of steel, DO spend the extra $$ to get an AC/DC tig welder.  You'll discover (like I did) that there are a whole lot of projects that come to mind, beyond bicycle frames, many of which involve aluminum.  Its well worth the extra $$.  For reference, I found a Thermal Dynamics TIG inverter machine for well under $1000 on ebay. Its only 160 amps but meets my need well.  good luck, zip.
