I swear, some of the crap I take in to work on makes me crazy. I have this fountain that a lady wants me to fix. It is made entirely out of very soft copper. I had to make a base for it, make a copper bird for it and silver solder several stems and leaves back on it. It was made in Mexico back in the 50's and was expensive even back then and is supposed to be a family heirloom. I have repaired every thing on it but have to make sure it works and tune it so all the birds dip like they are supposed to. The two tubes that go up through it are clogged. Simple, just shove a wire through them but a big wire won't go. I can shove some .035 hard wire through but not bigger wire. I tried blowing some air through but even air won't go, even after shoving the .035 through. I can tell that the bigger wire is hitting a clog as I can feel it pack. I was thinking maybe some Liquid Plumber like you use to unplug a drain but I don't know how it would react on the copper. The last photo is the top of where the water comes out. Any one have any ideas or suggestions? Attached Images
Reply:Don't use the liquid plumber, it will eat the copper or at best turn it green. Used it on some copper plumbing once and it ate right through the pipe. If that tubing is plugged with hard water deposits a bit of diluted muriatic acid dripped into the tube may loosen the deposits. The worst it will do is make the copper look new.
Reply:What about CLR?
Reply:I think CLR is about the same stuff, maybe milder.
Reply:The worst Muriatic will do is eat the solder, stay away from it. Maybe acetic acid would be safer. Also try tapping it with a hammer where you think the clog is.
Reply:Chuck up the wire into a drill and spin it while plunging it, might work for you.

Reply:The flattened end of wire will work but grind the tip like a spade bit.  Flat spade type bits were what blackmiths made before twist drills.  It is much like a woodworking flat drill only there is no center spur and the two sides form an angle around 118 degrees much like a twist drill.  I am wondering if there is a lump of solder in there.
Reply:run a new tube?
Reply:I bought an old TIG welder with a torch that had been cooled with well water. It was heavily limed up. The CLR cleaned it out quite well. That was 5 years ago and I'm still using that torch, but with a recirculating cooler now. If you can get any flow through it at all the CLR should clean it out. If it's blocked solid, drilling it out with a flattened wire,  followed by a CLR treatment would be my choice. Muriatic acid would do it too, but it can be pretty nasty if you get any on you. With CLR, but definitely when using muriatic acid, you should use long rubber gloves, safety glasses, a face shield, and a plastic or rubber apron. Wash all of the safety gear off with water when finished and before touching the exposed side with your bare hands or clothing.CharleyMiller MM252Miller Bobcat 225NTMiller DialArc HF / DIY Cooler2 Victor O/A TorchsetsMilwaukee 8" Metal SawMilwaukee Dry Cut "Chop" Saw 5 Ton Wallace Gantry Various Grinders, Benders, etc.
Reply:Vinegar will dissolve calcium deposits
Reply:I don't think the clog is calcium. I think it is bug stuff like spider webs or mud from mud packer wasps. I soaked it in vinegar for about an hour and then was able to run a wire through it and then blew air through it with the compressor. All is good now, thanks for the suggestions. Bob
