I work maintenance and we have virtually no aluminum equipment on site, aside from a few of these large tote bins to transfer product. That being said, the only thing we have to weld them is a stick welder and aluminum rods. All the other guys complained how bad it is and looking at some of the other repairs on these totes, I could see why. I've never welded aluminum before, but have read that you must get it super clean and go quick. The tote bin had a leg broken off. After thorough grinding, I read the package of the aluminum rods (call me crazy.) I used a MAPP gas torch and preheated the area I was going to weld as directed and went after it. Although I was not entirely pleased with the results, in my opinion they looked good in comparison to other previous welds. One of my welds - multiple passes with 3/32" @ 80AA previous weld on another leg- globs, look cold, and appears slag wasn't even removed.Any tips to get better welds with this method? Again, not enough aluminum on site to justify replacing our current DC tig machines or to add a spool gun to the Millermatic.

Reply:Matt you gotta be on your game with SMAW aluminum. It is lightening fast as i'm sure you know. You strike a arc and your down 1/3 of your rod LOL but not far from the truth! I only play with it for giggles, but in a pinch if your practiced it could bail you out in a jam. I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
