Evening gentleman, I am looking for some tips for burning 309 ss smaw rod. Most likely I will be running 309 3/32" in mostly 3g and 4g positions ss angle to carbon steel beams. I am a certified 3g 4g 7018 welder. I took a job running some brackets and now plans / specs have changed. All the brackets are now changing to stainless angle iron versus the carbon steel it was supposed to be per my company. I've welded 309 with great results in a flat position, but havent had much success in the vertical or overhead positions. What I tend to get is a weld that pulls to a hump in the center. Toes still seem to be tied in, not a cold rolled edge, but just a high center. Looking for any advice I could get. Im going to start practicing now, but I only by have some ****ty radnor 309 rod to play with tonight.  Thanks for looking and any help is much appreciated, Nick
Reply:It's been years since I ran any stainless steel, seems as I ran it like 7018. These are some 309 vertical up and over head welds I made with rod that was at least 30-years old at the time, and never seen a rod oven. Reply:I'm having some respectable results.  Suprisingly way better overhead than flat.  I took some pics. Will try to upload them later. Vertical should be passable with some more practice.
Reply:If I remember correctly 309 will run better than say 316, I think 316 is a lot more liquid.  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I recently had the same problem.  Gobbing up in the middle.  I hardly ever use the stuff.   I had to repair a cross-member on a tanker truck.   I'm a little mad at myself for not writing it down.   But I'm pretty sure what I did is:   Turn your amperage, maybe 10 amps more than you would w/ 3/32 7018 in vetical up, if your using 3/32 in 309 and make your side to side movement about twice as fast as you would w/ 7018.   Hold your punch in on the sides momentarily, but make that side movement across the middle about as fast as you can.   You'll be thinking, there no way this weld is tying itself together as little time you spend in the center area, but when I chipped the slag off, it looked normal.   It's not a relaxful rod to run out of position.   Again your really moving, and you'll be  laying a length of bead in no time.
Reply:I'll see if I have a list of better electrode which solidify rapidlyAWS A5.4 : E309L-15EN 1600 : E 23 12 L B 22Jungo® 309L  Lincoln ElectricLast edited by denlow60; 10-15-2013 at 07:51 PM.
