What do you all think of this statement?"MIG welding generally requires TWICE as much current as stick welding to achieve a sound weld."
Reply:Doesn't sound right to me, for a single pass weld of the same size/penetration I would think stick welding would use more current. JMOAirco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:Just taking the day off watching football and NASCAR and thumbing through the internet for welding topical comments and discussions and came across this... and other things that make me wonder... so I always like to know what's fact and what's fiction. So thanks.
Reply:The heat/and or energy that goes into a weldment is really measured in joules. Watts with a time component. So just using amperage or voltage alone as some blanket statement could get one in deep chit with the gurus.  1st you'd have to settle on a constant or two then start making comparisons after that.Last edited by Sandy; 10-20-2013 at 05:48 PM."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Tweak with your machine, and get at it bud! The gurus will give you a scientific analogy, but they can only talk physics, science and theory and you will very rarely see them post pics of the horrible crap that they talk so mighty of there knowledge.  Got me bud, now tear it up! Reply:Remember watt = watt. doesn't matter it we are welding in CV or CC. Look at a ohms law pie chart. E x I = W.Volts X current = watts. Raw power will not make a good weld. There are a lot of factors in making a strong weld.Base metal alloy, welding wire/rod alloy, power input and travel speed. Plus joint design.Have some shops swear by 80k psi duel shield as stronger than stick.  7018 stick is only 70k psi

Reply:Yep, rather what I figured; Just do it. But it's always nice to her what the folks here have to say about what I see people saying out there.
Reply:Miller online calculator lists about 140-150 amps 21-22 volts to weld 1/8" steel with mig solid wire, short circuit transfer.Stick is a little less amps, prob 125 amps, but I think slightly higher volts. (1/8" 7018, single pass)Probably almost identical - by my very unscientific methods Thus, the "twice as much" claim would seem unlikely to me.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:As long as I don't take one in the Joules it's all good.A friend of mine used to say"when in doubt, wind it out" but then he also used to say"me don't know,me don't tell,me push button,go like hell".....he drag raced push button Chrysler automatics.Last edited by vwguy3; 10-21-2013 at 03:27 PM.
