i bought an harbor freight 80amp inverter a couple weeks ago for tinkering around on thinner stuff and also to do scratch start tig. havent got to play around with the tig much but ran some 7014 3/32 rods tonight on 1/8in plate. a little on the colder side, machine only tops out a 80 amps but didnt run too bad for a cheap 120v machine thats good enough for non critical home welding.

Reply:80 amps is at the very bottom of the suggested range for 7014. That little machine really needs to be run with smaller rods or a rod like 6011 that will run at lower amps. If all you want to do is stick metal together it will work, but you really need more power than you get with that little box to run 3/32" rods..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
