Is there a cheap wielder for under 500 that I can learn on so i can use to do mods, fab and repair on my cars and motorcycles?from what im seeing a ac/cd gas tig is an option? or am i forced to get 2 different wielders for each metal?125-Amp Fluxcore Welder Kit says it does Weld carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, magnesium, copper, nickel, silicon bronze and other alloys. Welds mild steel up to 18-gauge to 3/16 in. in a single pass.
Reply:The claims for that cheap 125 fluxcore welder are ridiculous. Run away ...AC/DC TIG doesn't come cheap. A cheap Chinese machine or a screaming deal on a used domestic unit is still going to cost you about a grand to get set up. Even something like a Hobart Handler 190 with spool gun will be that much or more by the time you factor in the shielding gas.http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...Fehj7Aod1j0AZQDo you have access to 240V power, or only 120V?Last edited by Oldendum; 03-20-2015 at 10:58 AM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:If you only have 120V power at 20 Amps, I wouldn't plan on welding aluminum unless it is very thin. Just not enough power available.  In addition, you'd need a second gas cylinder for Argon, as the regular CO2 or Argon/CO2 mix for steel will not work. Next step up on the 120V inverter MIG welder food chain is the TWECO 141i at $575., which you could outfit for TIG (steel only) or do a bit of stick welding.http://www.weldersupply.com/P/849/Tw...catoriFREESHIP"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:A good O/A welder gets you a long way, and it isn't limited by only having 120V available in the garage. If it is suitable for your projects depends mostly on exactly what you will be welding on and if you are prepared to put the time in to learn how to use it. Not sure about the budget (especially since I assume you are in another part of the world), but I think a used set should be within your reach. If you start with a descent set you can get to work now, if you find that it doesn't fit all your projects (too small, too big, heavy...) you can get another more suitable torch later when you have a better idea of what you want.
