I want to cut the ends of an 8 foot pipe at 45 degree angles to make a rectangular frame. I have a chop saw. What is the best way to line up the two cuts so that they are in the same plane across the pipe? I want my frame to lay flat. Thanks
Reply:You could use a magnetic level placed on the last cut and look over at it. Or you can scribe a line on the center with chalk. Push your pipe up against a straight pc like a length of angle and draw a line then keep that line at the top...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:in the electrical world, we us a small level that you attach to the pipe. called a no dog.clamp your pipe and put the level an the end you are not going to cut and level it. Then, after cutting the one end, spin the pipe around, locate the pipe in your clamp, snug it, level it, tighten it, remove the no-dog level and cut away. the only time you take the level off is when you are ready to make the second end cut. You could leave it on but when the piece falls and hits the floor, figure you are going to need to guy buy another no-dog level.then, when you are welding,  clamp the pipes in a jig or set on a very flat floor and clamp the pieces together. If it were me, I would find a really flat floor to use. Set your pieces together and hit with a small tack. then you need to measure diagonally to be sure your corners are square. then weld away.
Reply:Cut one end and when you chuck the other end into the saw, put a torpedo level on the previously cut end, level it up and cut it. Works for me anyway..............................."Look Good Doing It"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply:There are several ways to do this.  One way is to clamp the pipe either in a piece of angle or a pipe vise to keep it from moving.  Using a combination square with a centering head and the square head above the centering head, this helps ensure your are plumb, mark top and bottom of the center line of the pipe on each ends.  Place the pipe in the saw and using your square make sure the marks are plumb then cut.  Repeat for other end.
Reply:Does anybody have a plasma cutting table set up at home? If so, what size, brand and what plasma system. I'm interested in setting one of these up at home down the road but the only ones I'm familiar with are in large fab shops and I don't want that big of a set up cost wise. Reply:For the plasma cnc machine look at Torchmate (starts at $1995), PlasmaCam, Bulltear, Dynatorch and a few others.Jim
