I found this project on another forumhttp://www.mytractorforum.com/showth...=268304&page=2I need a loader for all my wood chips!I'd like to build something similar since I signed up for getting free  wood chips I have gotten 5 dump truck loads of wood chips in the last few weeks . I moved around the first load via hand using a fork shovel and wheel barrel. Took two people most of the day! but I did get mulch around a lot of trees. I have a 42" husquaverna lawn mower tractor. The actual mechanical assembly looks pretty straight forward. I've never used 12V actuators though, i found these from Northern  toolhttp://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...3245_200333245is there a certain kind of actuator I should be using? I'm guessing the weight will be less than 250 poundsis there a better place to buy them?I found these similar ones on ebay for 1/3rd the cost.http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-10-Linea...item3cd867e030just trying to figgure out why I should buy one over the other?thanks for any help.Last edited by AluminumWelder; 01-03-2014 at 10:35 PM.Reason: clarification
Reply:I've done some searching on the web for linear actuators and I soon figured out that linear actuators and cheap don't belong in the same sentence.                                                            MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Cheap 12v actuators have extremely limited duty cycles.  Think $450 for an actuator capable of 250-500lbs that can only operate 30 seconds in two minutes.  They would not work well for raising and lowering buckets with any frequency.  And if you ever two-block one they burn up almost instantly.  Linear actuators are meant to infrequently raise or lower very regular loads.  Generally they have limit switches to stop them before they two-block.
Reply:what about using a atv winch? similar to atv plows.
Reply:what about using a atv winch? similar to atv plows. Not much better unless you pay high price and it needs pulleys, cables, brackets etc...and lots of amps , a nightmare for alternator and battery.maybe a small hydraulic pump on the deck's input or a power steering pump and hydraulic cylinders...is it wort it ? i doubt it.good luck.
Reply:what a heap, he should have saved his money and bough a nice scoop shovel.
Reply:yeah it does look kind of funny, but all the scoop shovels I've read about only lift up their load about half a foot and they carry about half what my deep wheel barrel does. Maybe I didn't look in the right places. do you have a scoop attachment you can recommend that can be raised at least a foot and has a decent sized bucket?
Reply:I'd redo the design like the picture shows. The back counter weights serve two purposes1. they add extra weight to tractor for better traction2. they counter balance the front load. This design would be 100 percent manual.I would add counter weights, so the bucket was always in the UP positionI could either user a single actuator in the back to lower the bucket scoopor perhaps I could make some sliding weights that could be moved up and down the arms to raise and lower the bucket. I could probably hire someone to just move all the wood chips for about the same price but that wouldn't be any fun and with any lucky I'll get regular loads of wood chips. therefore will need to use this contraption more often and be worth designing it.Maybe tomorrow I will see how feasible it is to weld the central pivot arm to the frame somehow.

Reply:There was a Scoop Shovel attachment on a guys Wheel Horse or Some overpriced Lawn/Garden tractor. It basically attached to the machine the same as the Snow Plow or Blower did.I remember it having a 2000# Winch on it?I can email the new Owner and see if there is a Web link, if anyone is truly interested??
Reply:I had an old CUB with a snow blower mounted on the front.  It worked great for moving snow but the weight of the blower in the raised position made the steering VERY heavy and traction was almost non existent even with 150 pounds of rear weight and chains.  That was a he!! of a lot more machine than the Husky in the picture.  The front axle on the Husky was never intended to carry much load so wheel bushings are going to take a beating  as are the king pin bushings.  The roll center will shift to an unstable point if the load is lifted more than a few inches and roll over protection would be a good idea.  Even the JD CUT tractors with a FEL are iffy.  I agree with Dave.  For that lawn mower, a trailer would make a lot more sense.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches

Reply:electric power for a loader just doesn't work well as cycle times would be very long. You could literally out-shovel such a loader by hand very easily. They work, sort of, for snow plows due to the limited travel distance. Here are a bunch of pictures of loaders for garden tractors, should be some ideas here.Another option is to rent a tractor and loader for a weekend to move the chips. There are all sizes and shapes, from walk-behind track loaders to skid-steers. You can rent them per day for less than a good quality electric actuator.Mr. HE
