So I'm working on this project to hardtail a motorcycle frame. However I ran into this little issue. The place I need to cut is right in the middle of that dent shown in the picture of the frame. Which means that slug on hardtail won't fit up.I was thinking of making the cut a little higher, getting some DOM steel tubing to replace that area with dent and tig weld it. This way I can weld up the hardtail to it.However I don't know if that would affect the strength of the backbone even more. The tubing is 1 1/2 with 0.125 wall. Any ideas or suggestions on how to properly go about this? Thanks
Reply:Cut it where it is supposed to be cut, fix the dent.  Not hard after the tubing has been cut.Are you currently an experienced tig welder?Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Not an experienced tig welder but decent with thicker steel. Still need practice on thinner metal  (18g sheet etc...)

Reply:Tig welding on tube is very challenging - lots of practice on flat stock first. After the first 100 hours it gets a lot easier in my opinion. That dent will be easy to work out after the tube is cut - good access then.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:You can fix the dent with a piece of rod the size of the inside diameter.  Grind the end round and polish it, then with a little grease tap it into the bent tube after it's been cleaned of any debris or burrs.  You can get a piece of tube the same size, put a dent in it and practice with it.  Then you can use some of the rod and the practice tube to dial in your welder or torch settings.  What process will you be using?

Reply:When welding tubing I try to turn the torch with my fingers or my hand so the torch angle won't get to crazy as I'm going around it.

Reply:Before I comment can you show a picture of the whole frame? I already see something that should be cut out as well.....I think. It may just be the lighting tho.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:I would cut it exactly where you need to cut it and make a round tapered pin and heat whats left of the dent and drive the pin in and massage the dent with a malot. I would make the drive pin so its shoulder is the same exact size as the i.d. and all should go easy peasie. If the pin gets stuck in there weld a big nut on it and spin it out with a impact gun. Without having it in front of me, that would seem like how i would go about it.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:The AMF Harley's were apparently the worst as far as any quality control.
