Local logger brought me a nice little project. Take a look at this!Gonna make all four tabs new because the holes are worn out too bad for weldments. Gotta get the machine shop to make some weldments for the main boom. I'll post more pics as it goes along.Miller trailblazer301gLincoln sa200Miller251Miller spectrum 625Victor oxy-acc2002 Chevy duramax 3500 dually 4x4

Reply:If you are going to make new ears then have a set of them burnt, Cabon arc off the old ones, clean it up, tack it with a piece of cold rolled in place of the shaft, gusset as need be, and weld it like you know what they are going to do with it.Swanny

Here's a thread where I did a job similar to what you're doing.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...job&highlight= Here's a great thread where a guy built a line boring setup from scratch. Reply:Is that off of a Ponsei Forwarder . Looks like grease wasn't priority on that machine . Reply:Very nice, irishfixit! I've done this kind of job in the past and it always works. Its  just like everything else. It takes time and patience. Reply:Its a rough life at best for logging equipment . When you figure the hydraulic power and what gets done to these machines its a wonder they hold together . Is it a swampy area where those are used? With the cold it seems like there is more breakage compared to wear.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:Originally Posted by BlackbeardWell it all depends, sometimes they're in a pine stand on a sand hill and sometimes in a low bottom hardwood muck. They run dual wheels when in low places but it's a pain cuz they have to take them off to transport. I  also welded a few dual rings on some rims before for them. As for cold being an issue, we don't get below freezing much until today. I heard of a lot of people having trouble with brake lines on trucks today. Nothing works good in the cold.12345678910, thanks for the vids! Is that you in there?

Reply:6 hours of welding and boring and it would be back in the woods.Well I don't have a bore and don't know who does around here. The main boom that hooks to this has already had weldments before and are now busted loose. I'm gonna get the machine shop to make some stuff today but might not get it till Friday.Miller trailblazer301gLincoln sa200Miller251Miller spectrum 625Victor oxy-acc2002 Chevy duramax 3500 dually 4x4

Reply:Nice fab work, Blackbeard. Now the bad news... alignment and clearance is going to be extremely difficult to get and to keep.Especially if filling "the big valley" around the bushing; and it won't do the bearing any favor to be in there during welding. Not sure how much clearance there is now, but this is probably going to shrink and pull to at least a tight fit at the pin. This really is a candidate for boring.Last edited by denrep; 01-12-2014 at 10:19 PM.
Reply:denrep is right this will be nothing but bad news when done.
Reply:Ok, well the job is done. As for the bad news, well.....fits like a glove, rubber gloves! Yes I did have to run a flapper wheel in the holes after welding the rings and pipe on the tabs cuz the pins were a little tight. I did manage to keep them from drawing with the help of temporary bars welded across them. I forgot to take a pic of it so I'll get it tomorrow. I had something else come in and was in a hurry to get it ready to move so when it was all ready I coated the holes with grease and wrapped plastic around it to keep it from rusting. As for welding the bushings with the bearing in, I was afraid they would be too tight after welding so I pressed them in before then made one pass and they we're loose enough to come out. So I did weld it without them. When I was done with that I let them cool and they shrunk. Then with a little lube and the help of my 1" impact they went right in. Heres a pic of that.It helps to put the steel bushings in the freezer before pressing in. At least that's what I've heard so that's what I do.Miller trailblazer301gLincoln sa200Miller251Miller spectrum 625Victor oxy-acc2002 Chevy duramax 3500 dually 4x4Originally Posted by BlackbeardIt helps to put the steel bushings in the freezer before pressing in. Reply:Have you ever tried one of the adjustable reamers . The ones with the tapered blades work pretty well when you need to shave out a thousandth or 2-3 .Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:No I have split a piece of 1 1/2 pipe and inserted a 36 grit sanding belt and wrapped around the pipe. Welded a bolt on one end to fit a drill. Works in a pinch. And if it needs to be bigger just wrap another layer or two.Miller trailblazer301gLincoln sa200Miller251Miller spectrum 625Victor oxy-acc2002 Chevy duramax 3500 dually 4x4

Reply:Well, I decided to put them together this morning and found out it did draw some even though I braced it off before welding. Made an extension for my grinder and got it together.I'll have to admit this was more than I bargained for but i made some cash and also learned a bit.
