So I got my whole scratch start tig rig together and completed but now I'm confused. Would I run this under the stick mode or tig without a pedal mode? And also what tungsten would be best for scratch start? I normally run red at school but that's hi freq start and all the fun stuffLast edited by bbertb; 04-02-2015 at 07:54 PM.
Reply:Well I would think you should put the machine to tig mode sense you are tig welding. Yes use the red tungsten. Use the 1/16 if your under about 125 amps. I have a feeling you will be asking more questions

Reply:This machine has touch start, so you can tig weld without a pedal, just won,t be able to control the output.Mike
Reply:Have you run through the machine at all? Choose tig, choose without pedal. Its pretty dummy proof.

Reply:You can run it in either stick or tig. In tig it would be lift start, in stick it would be scratch start. Same as tig welding with a stick welder.I personally liked to run my multi process machine in stick and scratch it as it was faster to whip it like a match and get going. But you don't get to use the foot pedal that way.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:Originally Posted by motolife313I think you mean gas valve on the torch. Doing a little more research before buying a machine would be a good idea
Reply:Do you have a hi freq switch
Reply:You can just scratch the tungsten to the metal and it with start a arc just like stick welding.  Try it
Reply:No I know what scratch start is. I've ran it a couple times at school. I have no hi freq so its either lift arc or scratch start and the scratch start was cheaper
Reply:Post some tig pics when you figure it out. You need argon and 70s2 filler

Reply:You need 1/16 and 3/32 red tungsten 5 6 and 7 cup at around 10 to 15 cfh depending on stick out. Get atleast a 150cf tank
Reply:you can use lift start without the pedal.

Reply:Unless he wants to get a 10 or 12 and have to use 30 cfh or more and waste his money ya I think. Those are the cups I use. Somtimes a long one
Reply:i think that when you tig on stick mode it is scratch which makes sense, and for tig on tig mode it is lift. Like mentioned above. However if you do not have a pedal put it on the no pedal mode. it depends on what torch you bought for the machine in regards to gas valve and that~VictorPraxairAir LiquideMillerLincoln Electric
Reply:That machine requires major surgery to attach the connector for a foot pedal. I mean, seriously, a 2015 multi function machine without high frequency AND you have to buy a kit and wire up the foot pedal controller? What were you thinking Lincoln? I would avoid this unit. If you are a Lincoln guy and interested in TIG, I'd go with the Aspect 375.HF 98233 Stick/TigHF  95136 PlasmaEastwood TIG200Eastwood MIG250Damn, I cut it twice already and it's still too short!
