Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power.
Reply:That is an amazingly simple idea that is well executed. Kind of nice not to have to listen to the whine of a hydraulic splitter. How much weight did you put above the splitting wedge?
Reply:That is quite interesting. I'm guessing the weight would vary depending on what you used for a spring? Stronger the spring the more weight you'd want it swinging?Bruce
Reply:The wood I have here is so tough that your splitter wouldn't split it.  Sometimes by big Hydraulic splitter won't.  But for the wood you Have that is great.  Mac
Reply:looks like a very doable idea. I like it. got any specs on it? I want one.Lincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)
Reply:Very cool. I just hate lifting logs up to a platform for splitting purposes. The ol' back ain't what it used to be. "Hey I didn't come to look and learn, I came to turn and burn.... If I can't light up, I'm gonna light out!"-JodyIdealarc 250 "Fatman"MM 252MM 211 "Little boy" Victor Torches
Reply:Great for straight grained pine.Tim Beeker.
Reply:I don't know...Inertia of mass and the wedge are the 8th and 9th wonders of the mechanical world. And that steel 4x4 -if that's what it is- looks like a lot of mass driving a well-tapered wedge.I wouldn't be surprised if it'd split about any old "iron-y" wood. What's the skinny with the splitter, lstilts?Last edited by denrep; 12-30-2013 at 02:07 PM.
Reply:That's some REALLY straight grained wood. Would like to see what it would do with some gnarly cherry knots and twisted wood. still a cool idea. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Very cool! I just hate anything that revolves around firewood. As a youngster iv'e avoided trees going the wrong way, and diving to safety, my uncle ran a chainsaw halfway through his knee, and I watched my dad cut my cousins thumb of as a kid when the saw hit a knot and skipped! I spent a lot of time as a youth in Pennsylvania cutting wood and to this day I hate anything that revolves around it. Dad had a chainsaw flip out of his hand about two years ago when it hit another log in a pile. It clipped his face and looked like a cut from shaving. You don't get any closer than that! He runs new Stihl's now and the old Homelites are for back up, but I was brought back to bad memories watching your hand so close to that ax head. I still cut wood, but I don't like doing it. Great job on your build tho bud, be safe!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Sorry I don't have any specs, I didn't build it, but I may build one. I have everything but the spring. I'm like some of the others, I'm not sure how it will do on some of the knotty hickory & oak we have here. I have a piece of thick-wall tubing about the right size to make the splitting head, I was thinking of filling it with lead to add weight to match the spring tension. I need to hit the salvage yard soon.Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power.
Reply:That is pretty cool. Simple yet effective.I'd like to see what it would do to Oak.

Reply:Yea I just made one myself. It works surprisingly well. It split a cherry lof, oak, maple, and ash. Some was a little notty. It was definitely not as straight grained as the video guys. I will try some other woods and let you all know. I just built it out of stuff around my shop and barn.Lincoln A/C Buzz boxLincoln A/C D/C Tombstone Lincoln 125 Mig MachineLincoln SA 200Miller DEL 200Miller AEAD 200LE
