Anyone have ideas or suggestions for a Welding table. I have just bought my first welder a few months ago and welding on a bench vise is less than ideal. I have some ideas in my head but would like some more opinions and suggestions. Thanks in Advanced,Brandon
Reply:I've just started my first purpose built welding table for my small shop, you can see what I'm doing > HERE < and I'll be watching this thread for any ideas that other have to offer for sure.Maybe if you tell us a bit about what you are planing to do for welding and what kind of welder etc you have, we can offer on target advice.Cheers!Dragon D-150 Arc WelderHobart Handler 175 Set up with 100% CO²WT-60 Plasma Arc Panasonic TIG Star YC-300TWX-2 Panasonic YX-0092UW Water Cooler for the TIG

Reply:Thanks for the Reply, I have a Handler 140 for now, looking for a tank but am currently running it with .035 flux core from HTP. Which runs really smooth for the price. But for a table I am looking to make it about 2 feet by 4 feet. Thinking about using angle iron, but if anyone has any idea about materials I am open. for a top I'm looking at 1/4" to 3/8" plate. If I can find thicker I will use it, but that is what my local steel yard has on hand. I am really just looking for other peoples ideas like yours using the square tubbing to support the top all the way across.BrandonHandler 140
Reply:If you can get 3/8" for the top go for it, it will be better than 1/4". You can add 2" receiver tubing at the corners to add accessories to the table(like a vise) and remove it when not needed. I have some bench vises and a pipe vise for mine. I also made a shelf for the chop saw and made the deck on it level with the table top, so long material will be supported by the table for cuts. No need to be taking up space on the table for things you don't always use. Electrical outlets can also be handy, connected to only one cord to supply them. Then you can just plug into the one closest to where you are working.Having your vises mounted to 2" tubing means you can use them in the receiver hitch on your truck if you go somewhere that you can't take the table. Anything that can be bolted to a work bench can be mounted to fit in the receiver tubes so you can pick and choose what you want to use only when you need it and leave the table top open for when you need it that way. Reply:The thicker the better on the table top, as there will be times you will need to straighten, (clamp) something and it may need more than 3/8" plateto straighten it, but whatever you can afford. and as for the legs i'd use square tube as you don't have to cope anything.Swanny

Reply:You'll find a few benches here for ideas:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...=WWF+Smackdown
Reply:I currently have a 4'x4' table in my garage with a 1/2" solid top.  I am running out of room and it will soon have to be replaced with a smaller table, which will be somewhere around the size you are doing.  I think this time around for the table instead of using a solid top sheet I am going to use pieces probably around 6" wide and setup as T-slots to use milling machine style hold down clamps.  I may also drill and tap a row or 2 of holes down the pieces.

Reply:Brandon Brown - As welding is new to you . . . Save yourself a lot of pain, and take Duker's link to heart.200mphbusa's - WWF SmackDown - is a macro answer to a micro question.BB - Build a table that serves you best.  Take advantage of the 'Advanced Search' function; there is no shortage of good table ideas.  And always keep in mind - that less is more.Opus
Reply:Watch for a good deal on a used table at a fraction the cost of the material to build one.At least watch for a steel plate which is thick enough and flat enough for the purpose.

Reply:Until your ready to spend money, simply get two plastic (or wooden) saw horses and throw up a piece of plywood.  If you need a metal top surface to conduct the current, simply use a piece of sheet metal.  Yeah you can't bang on the new table, but it will work as an instant "welding platform," until you get a solid steel one.A Liberal is someone who lives in a gated community with private security,  but says that a boarder fence won't work and people don't need guns for self protection.
Reply:if you're building a welding bench you may want to mount a vice this way. vices bolted directly onto the corner of the bench itself limits it's accessibility. imvho anyway. Attached Imagesi.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:Nice tables I like the vise mounts . Been thinking how to do that.   One thing I did to keep welding vise grips at the table I welded them to about 8 feet of light chain then to the bottom of the table kept them for quite a few years . Good luck make what will do you the most good.
Reply:As folks have said, there's a ton of good ideas but one I like is only missing one thing; the "Bentley" nameplate!http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...=welding+table
