So I just started these boxes the other day.  They are 28x18x16 quite a job when you don't have a press brake.  Turning out good so far, just got a small gap on one side of the door guess where metal warped a little, got locks for them but now I think I need some kind of latch I can suck it in good with.  I usually just spray paint everything but this seems a little much to spray paint gonna take forever and stinks.  I was wondering if anybody ever used one of the 20-30 dollar cheap spray guns you can buy at atwoods and the farm type black paint you can also buy at atwoods or tractor supply.  I've never used a spray gun before sure their can't be much to it and I'm trying to stay as cheap as I can on this project just getting some input. Reply:farm implement paint will work fine...  I have found that brush painting holds up very well, it takes a while to dry, but is durable..  Get a good brush and the paint will lay down good also. If you decide to get a spray gun, get the reducer and hardener for the paint..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:I spray a lot of the tractor paint. I use a cheap spray gun. Some of the reds and orange TSC type paints will fade. If given a choice I think Atwoods sells Vansickle and TSC sells Magic brand. The Magic brand is not near as good as Vansickle. I've also had good luck with gallons of Rustoleum black from Walmart. Do as the poster above says and use the reducer and hardner for the brand of paint you choose and follow the directions. A while back TSC quit selling Valspar paint which was also a good industrial paint.
Reply:hey thanks I don't know crap about spraying paint, why I asked.  The atwoods here sells the vansickle I believe.  I was just worried about making it look smooth if I brushed it on.
Reply:Like Brucer said, brush is cheaper and, IMHO, you get a lot better coverage and a lot less clean up as well.  If you get a good paint it's self levelling so no brush marks. I built a small trailer last year and I bought a gallon of Behr metal paint, it wears like iron, goes on thick and no brush marks.....Mike
Reply:The VanSickle paint is tough as nails, get the tractor chassis gloss black... It lays down great with a good brush, and is tough as nails and the last gallon I bought cost $14.99.. I plan on spraying my 27 T-bucket chassis with the VanSickle tractor chassis black..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:With those big flat areas, you could also put the paint on with a roller and just use a brush for the areas the roller doesn't get.
Reply:Use Rustoleum heavy duty brown primer and anything else over it.  They sell it at Home Depot in quarts or gallons.  Apply with a brush, you'll get a thicker coat. I did my '58 Ford 801 with it 11 years ago.  Still adherent to the metal even though paint has peeled in spots.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
