I am looking for an older arc welder. I want to add to my collection that you see in my signature. Just a really good hobby welder up to 1" capabilities. Looking for recommendations. Reply:Do you have the electrical service to supply somewhere between, say, 60-90 Amps?  Idealarc 250 or Dialarc 250.  If you would be satisfied with AC only, I've seen big old Marquette or Mid-States welders sell for a song.  There's the odd Miller or an AIRCO (many made my Miller) that could be a good deal.  I need to check out the old Lincoln AC180C I bought for $50.  I got it just because it was cute (and heavy as hell), but I'll bet it can still melt metal just fine. It all depends on your locality.  On the East coast here, I can get a decent stick welder for anywhere between $50. and $300."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Well budget is really 0. But you have to spend money to make money. I had over $100,000 in body work tools but someone took the side of my shop off and cleaned me out one holiday weekend. I have been trying to recover from that for about 5 yrs now. It is hard to loose 20yrs worth of tools in a weekend. I felt for the longest time, someone had chopped off my arms. Tools are my life. I like to buy quality tools not junk. I am relying on you guys to point me in the right direction and I will listen with respect and thanks. I have not really stick welded since high school metal shop. So I may be on here a lot asking questions and such, I appreciate everything you all do. Thanks Brian.I was wondering about those machines also, look good outside but what about inside. Being that they come from schools is that better or worse for the wear and tear?power max 45miller 180matco 160 hobart beta mig IIthermal dynamics pch 20Lincoln Idealarc tig 300/300 code 8167-c
Reply:You know I run across 3 phase stuff all the time. I wonder how hard it would be to add three phase to my shop. Reply:Call the power company. As to new arc welders the old tried and true still exist and are the same.Lincolns, Millers, Hobarts. There's other good ones but what's the point ? Nearly every real LWS in the world has them so accessories are a breeze and parts wont be needed unless you get drunklezzed and slam your car into it.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)

Reply:I need another welder like I need a hole in my head, but I'd buy that welder! I'd guess you'd need a 100-amp breaker if you ever ran that welder at full amps. I did some rearranging in the tool room yesterday and had my guy take some mag wheel cleaner and the compressor and blow the crap out of a few tools and clean them up like I was trying to sell them. I didn't buy piezes of chit and I don't want them to look like piezes of chit when I pull them out to use them. I've seen $700 miter saws with overspray, silicone, glue....... all over them. Reply:Well, sorry for your loss. If you catch the thieves we can have a party to celebrate.........the end of their.. well hell you know. I know where your at with collecting tools, quality tools that cant be replaced in a matter of a few days. You kinda get attached to them especially if you make a living with them. If your having to play catch up or start over, get what you can get to get by. If your going to start welding for a few people in your shop(you mentioned stick weld) just get a good DC machine. A lot of it comes down to preference. Do you like blue or red or whatever. Each brand welds a bit different than the other. Its like grabbing your favorite hammer with the nick in the handle. It might bother somebody else to use it but you couldn't live without it. Get a good one and get good with it.As for your school machines they usually just have a lot or very few hours on them. Mostly a lot.Arcon Workhorse 300MSPowcon 400SMTPowcon SM400 x 2Powcon SM3001968 SA200 Redface1978 SA250 DieselMiller Super 32P FeederPre 1927 American 14" High Duty LatheK&T Milwaukee 2H Horizontal MillBryan

Reply:I bought this Lincoln model TIG -300/300 Came with leads tig torches and foot pedal. Now anyone in this area want to come play with it and teach and tell me what I have and so on. I am in Santa Fe, TX. 77510 I could use the help if anyone is willing. I don't have much money but can pay some. Even if you came by and looked at it and tested it and tell me what I need to get going with it.
