Can an electric motor be damaged if you stick weld a part to the machine base(in this case a lathe)?thanks, Brian
Reply:As long as you have the ground attached to the base you are fine. It's when the path of weld current is allowed to flow through the motor that bad things happen. Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Reply:Electric motors are pretty tough just connect your ground to the same structure you are welding and keep it as close as possible to the weld site. You don't want weld current to pass through hinges and bearings.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:If it is a vented motor (open), you should protect from spatter entering and contacting the windings.
Reply:Don't let the ground go through any rotating (including lathe bearings) or electric parts. Put your clamp as close to the weld area as possible. I saw a lathe ruined by being set up for spray arc. The ground went through the bearings and slides, ruining the lathe.
Reply:Take a lot of breaks to let things cool and move fast. You don't want to melt anything inside.
Reply:Try and electrically isolate the windings from everything (basically unplug it) |
