couple of powcon 300 sm questions

just got a powcon 300sm, no power plug on cord, and weather it works or not is ?????   So I pulled the cover off and i see all the buss bars are set up for 230 volt, would i assume that is single phase? and is the high volt (460 volt set-up) for 3 phase? I will be running it (I hope) on 220 single phase. so hopefully i can just wire the plug on and plug her in.....another question is the togle sw. on the control panel has 3 positions SMAW....GMAW SHORT....and GMAW... so what is gmaw short used for?   Thanks in advance.
Reply:Gmaw short circuitAnd the other is for gmaw sprayI believe it will "auto link" single or three phaseThere no cord at all? Or was the cord cut?With original cord, you connect the black and white to hot and green to ground and don't hook up red. For single phase operation
Reply:If you use the spray position, be sure your tip is recessed, and  that you have the machine set right.  The first time I tried the spray setting I ruined a tip.
Reply:yea, just the end plug was removed, it has about 8' of power cord (4 conductors) and no end plug....with no feeder, i will just be doing SMAW to see how it goes....wire feeders are more $$$$ than the welder power supply itself, about 3 times more...WHY is that? that just does not seam right......

Reply:Three phase power will give you 300 amps. single phase power will only give you 200 amp of welding power. Just like all the newer inverter welders, on single phase you have to power the right two of the three input wires for the welder to even power up and the fan run.

Reply:Late to the discussion, I just purchased a powcon 300ss. In addition to the bus bars, I needed to flip a circuit board to use with 220 power. The welder is still a work in progress, so let mew know how yours works out. Good luck
