Hello, Im pretty much new to welding. I dont know a ton about different machines and process.  The only welding ive done is wire feed welding (flux and solid wire) using macines with built in feeders (like the little lincolns and whatnot).I just bought an old miller stick/tig welder locally off craigslist.  It was really cheap so I thought id pick it up.  Ive done a fair amount of reading up on the machine.here are some of its specificationsPRIMARY VOLTAGE...........208/230/460AMP........................................80/72/36KW......................................... 14KVA....................................... 16.5FREQ.......................................60 CYLSECONDARY VOLTAGE.....AC         DC                                                    40            30AMPS.........................................200          200DUTY CYCLE..........................60%       60%MAXIMUM...............................35%        35%I also recently started looking into/trying to educate myself on mig power supplies (the type that require an umbilical style wire feeder). So my question is what is the difference between the tig/stick welder I have and one of those mig powed supplies.  If my welder has the option to do ac or dc, why I am I unable to put it on dc and use a remote wire feeder to mig weld.  Ive also seen some videos of people with old diesel stick welders with a miller suitcase feeder attached to it and theyre able to mig weld with those.Let me know what you thinkthanks for the help & info-scott
Reply:Do a search on Constant Current (CC) power supplies vs. Constant Voltage (CV).  Stick/TIG is CC whereas MIG is CV by design.  Yes, there are feeders that will work with CC but it's not ideal."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:oh thanks for that info, i will look into thatso what processes can you use those cc power supplies for? mostly just mig welding?thanks
Reply:CC = stick/TIG.  What model Miller did you buy?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welding_power_supplyLast edited by Oldendum; 10-20-2013 at 04:10 PM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Those old 320's and 330's are great machines for stick and tig. Chances are you won't out grow it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of some newer machines, but many guys still wouldn't trade theirs for a newer unit..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:I just hooked up my Miller 340 to a Hobart Hefty suitcase feeder (the shop I got the feeder from had been running theirs of SA-200s and similar). It had a roll of .045" E71T-11 (unknown brand, it was marked with a Sharpie) and it behaved well. There are various threads by more experienced welders than I covering what works, but you can certainly MIG off your Miller.  Look out for suitcase feeders by Hobart and Thermal Arc on Craigslist since they sell for less than Miller due to the name and work well.
