I am currently living in wichita, kansas while my lady friend finishes her degree but I am from the tulsa oklahoma area. If I join the wichita local pipefitter union would I ever be able to move to tulsas 798 pipeline union. Or would I be able to move to any other local for that matter?
Reply:UA Pipe fitter’s union, and the 798 Pipe liners union are two separate unions. If you join the UA Pipe fitter’s union it should be fairly easy to transfer to another UA local.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:So you can't join a seperate union? If I was already in the pipefitter union would I have to start from the bottom of the 798? Sorry for the silly questions and I appreciate you taking the time to answer for me.
Reply:Yes you can join separate unions. member here JTMcC belongs to 798, but works out of other unions as well.If you join 798, you won’t necessarily start on the bottom if you go in as a journeyman. If you join as a helper, that will be below a journeyman.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:If your a member of a UA union hall, you can boom out and work through other UA Union halls as a travel card. If there is enough work and each hall is willing to allow it.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Thank you for the replies. if I'm in a pipefitter union I wouldn't be able to work in the pipeline union though right? It would have to be another pipefitter local?
Reply:You would have to check with the Union for current policies. I am a retired Union member and I was able to get a TRAVEL CARD to work in another Union out of State. At that time the Union was reciprocal with mine.

Reply:Not to mention, from what I've read over the past few years, 798 closed the books. Too many members, not enough work. But that could change, if we actually got politicians that want to see American's back to work........... Yeah, right!!!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:for the record, 798 IS under the UA.  whether or not you could get work under there jurisdiction as a member of a different local probably has a lot to do with who you know and what kind of tickets you hold.  its my understanding that 798 is VERY protective of THEIR WORK, and rightfully so.  As a UA Member with a travel card, you can often go anywhere in the US (or canada) that has a call for labor that applies to you.  Know that your name can have a lot to do with it, as well as your local #.  its all about what you can do and who you know.  hope this helps.edit: its worth mentioning that actually transfering your book CAN prove to be difficult, depending again on not only your local but the local your transferring to.  It wasnt long ago (couple monthes maybe) that I had a conversation with a welder out of my local that attempted to transfer his book to a georgia local only to be told by certain people around here that it just wasnt going to happen. this isnt the first time ive heard stories like that around here, but first time hearing from the actual person it happened to.  anyways just thought it might be something to considerLast edited by ct1811; 04-21-2015 at 09:48 PM.
Reply:Hi jkwright13   MOST of the rules are the same in each UA local.  They are governed by the International. You can get all your questions answered by going to the hall and talking to a Business Agent. You can only belong to one UA local at a time But if there is enough work in their jurisdiction, you can transfer to any  localA local may not take in any new members if there is not enough work for its current membersA lot of locals will start you out as an apprentice based on you experience in pipefittingWith most locals around me (Michigan), the apprentice program is 5 years with a school day every 2 weeks. If you are not in school. you are getting on the job training with pay.  The apprentice class consists of learning pipe welding and how to install all types of pipe for heating, cooling, and air conditioning. You may work in new buildings, hospitals, car plants, powerhouses and nukes, steel mills, etc. After you become a journeyman, you can get a "travel card" and go find work in any UA local in America and CanadaIt's easier to find work as a certified pipe welder, but some locals may have work for non welding UA members. Some locals have sent out calls for tube benders and just "fitters" when their members couldn't man all the work.Sometimes non UA locals need extra "bodies" on a temperary basic and will let the UA local near them know. An example would if the Boiler Makers Local needs extra welders and can't get them from with inAny wayGood luckMike
Reply:Spent 7 years in California on a travel card. Transferred my book last November. Sit on a travel card for three years at one local and that hall has to take you. UA rules. Plenty of halls have "short line" agreements. There are two in California. One I know of in NJ. Reply:Thanks for all of the information guys and sorry if some of the questions seem redundant. I am just trying to plan my next step. The 798 seems pretty impossible to get into right now which is a bummer. I guess their books have been closed for a while.Do the guys in 798 actually live around the Tulsa area or can they live wherever as long as they report to work?
Reply:I know three 798 hands. One lives in Tennessee, one lives in Arizona, one lives in Florida.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
