Wondering what the process of joining a union is.  I'm interested in maybe becoming a apprentice millwright when I finish school.  I have a couple friends who work in unions and I believe they applied to the job first and had to join the union within a certain amount of time.  Reading around though I've I've interpreted that some guys join unions and the unions find work for them.  Looking for an explanation of how things work I guess the two closest unions would be carpenters 1143 and ICMA 548.  I know traveling would be required but would like to stay as close to home as possible local 1143 would be the closest and there are a couple businesses in lacrosse wi which is about half an hour way and I think they get a fair amount of local work.  548 isn't as close,  don't know the difference between the two really.  Any info would be appreciated.

Reply:Construction trade unions work a little different than plant operation unions. I suspect your local millwright hall may want to to come in and wright an aptitude test of some sort before they offer to put you on their books and start working you as an apprentice. As as stated already, give them a call or better yet, go in to see them in person and inquire. Have a discussion with the business agent or business manager and they will set you straight.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:in nyc the unions will advertize in the local papers they are taking apprenticeship applications. if you should decide to apply bring your sleeping bag and come early. the lines sometimes stretch for blocks and applicants could be waiting a couple days.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
