Building a man gate to my back yard and have some questions. My original plan was to make the frame from 1.5" 0.120 wall square. And then use 3/4" 0.065 wall square for the vertical fill pieces. But my hanging post is just a 4x6 pressure treated post and I'm worried with such a heavy wall frame it's going to be hard on my post. But with kids I'm worried if it's not a beefy frame they will just damage it from slamming it. Am I over thinking this? Gate will be 72" high and 40" wide
Reply:I think your material selection will be fine. As for the post either an earth anchor or attaching to the lower portion on the next post with a cable and turnbuckle will help. Also attach your hinges as close to where the horizontals intersect with the verticle tube.
Reply:That material will be more than sufficient.
Reply:For the post there is no other post I can connect to as the gate is 90 degrees to the fence. The 4x6 post is even orientated so it'll be hanging on the short side. I was thinking of putting a c channel on the post to help it out it.
Reply:You could add a wheel on the far end from post. I'm sure the kids are gonna hang on it.

Reply:A lot will depend on how deep the post is in the ground, where your frost line is, etc. The heavier the gate, the more important it is to have a solid post that extends down below the frost line and has concrete in the hole around it to keep is solid. Reply:i'd make it out of 1/16th thick wall tube completely, .125 is overkill IMHO.If the kids mess it up i'd discipline them, normal to rought use it will be fine.with all the cross bracing on most gates you seriously have to be hell bent on breaking one to get it damaged.
Reply:The weak link is likely the post anchoring in the ground. If you push the top, can you move it? - how deep is it?  Is it in concrete? To reinforce if necessary,  dig a 16" square hole, 16" deep around it and pour concrete.
Reply:I have built many gates for cattle (up to 14 feet wide) out of 1.25" X .125wall square tubing and have got up to 20 years of service out of them,  so your material should stand up to anything the kids can deliver unless they drive into it.  To brace the post I would  make a 24" by 24" L bracket out of 2" to 4" angle iron and before I installed the post, i would bolt the angle on so the leg is burried about 6 inches below the path threw the gate.  This should help with both frost heaving and sagging from the wieght of the gate.
Reply:"To reinforce if necessary, dig a 16" square hole, 16" deep around it and pour concrete"I added some steel gates to an existing fence years ago.  I dug out 16" around the past about 4" deep and poured concrete.  The  large footprint provides a lot of resistance to movement.  Those posts are still going strong with no problems.  My gates were 72" wide x 72" tall.
Reply:The pressure treated post is 4' into a concrete filled hole. I can flex the post by pushing on it. But the ground doesn't move.
