I am posting this just because I feel compelled to share.  I am sure some of you folks probably have one of these critters, maybe even still in use!I acquired this little beauty yesterday afternoon:Slow, I am sure. I have a bandsaw for speed, but acquired this as a machine rebuild project.  All the parts are there and it can be demonstrated to function by turning the drive pully by hand.  The pully is bent beyond use but I think I can straighten it satisfactoily.  If not I will need to find or make a replacement. (That's what my lathe is for! Making replacement parts.)This hacksaw is the original 12" model produced by Covel Mfg of Benton Harbor, MI.  Sears Roebuck & Co sold the same model with a Craftsman badge as Model # 108.1501.  After Atlas Press either acquired Covel or acquired rights to produce certain Covel products (I am not sure which) Sears continued marketing the same saw as Model # 101.22940.  I found an ad in a PM magazine, June 1948 showing this saw offered by Covel for $44.75.   A Sears powertool flyer dated 1964 offers a perfect clone for $79.99.  I checked with the Sears Partsdirect on line and found some of the parts listed under both model numbers are still available through Sears.  The form and format of the drawings on the Sears PartsDirect web site were different, but the parts look the same.  I am sure the parts are pretty much fully interchangeable.A true masterpiece rebuild was posted on forum.bodybuilding.com back in March, 2006: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...9&d=1143222404I don't know if mine will sport such an elaborate paint scheme... maybe, maybe not.  Hrmmmm... Maybe pinstripes and fluer de lilly....If any of you have one of these that you do not use and need some space let me know.  I may be interested in lightening your inventory of broken or unused machinery if we can work out a mutual arrangement.    If you have an owner's manual that would be great!  As Atlas became Clausing I plan to contact Clausing tomorrow to see if they have a manual, and maybe a new pully. - MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Cool Mondo, get it going and use it! The old power hacksaws cut very straight, and as a bonus you can use the old blades for making fillet knives.Matt
Reply:Should make for a really cool project Mondo.Looks like it may benefit from a new (thicker) blade tensioner folcrum.  The one in the refurb link photo appears to be a thicker, cast piece and yours looks like it may be a flat bar stock 'replacement'.If that pulley needs replacement, do you think it would make sense to use a two or three step arrangement on the saw/motor for quick cut speed changes?MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Mondo- I have craftsman badged saw almost identical to yours.Bought off CL for $50.Yours has two features that mine doesn't.There's what appears to be a piece of threaded rod going throughthe base under the vise.Is that for attaching a stop for cutting mutiple pieces to same length? And there's what looks like aweight on a rod under the crankwheel. Was this for belt tension?Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite

Reply:Oh yeah.. the threaded rod through the base under the vise...  I haven't examined that yet.  It is chopped off too close to the base to perform any external function like a stop for multiple same-length pieces.   We shall see how this turns out after I find time to devote.  Right now it looks like a project for next winter.  After I rebuild the extra lathe.-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:it isnt mine, but if anyone is interested someone has one on the Greensborro North Carolina craigslist. they relist it every couple days.http://greensboro.craigslist.org/tls/1837380919.htmlLater,Randy
Reply:I  guess I should have looked more closely. What I thought was a weight is actually part of the base.I'm building a new stand for mine and was wondering how I was going to make an auto shut off.I now have a pretty good idea.Thanks.Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
