i cut some notches in this file  and it is excellent for slag removal. i used the file the other day as a hammer just because it was in my hand and got to see some real nice fine gray grain in the metal where it snapped.  ground out a little vee, some  3/32   7018 at 80 amps and shes almost as good as new... Reply:I also have a file handy when stick welding. I scratch the end of a partially used rod so I get a good restrike."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:A guy i worked with sharpend his file at the end like a chisel for his slag file, made a good multi use tool.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.

Reply:Find somebody with a big, industrial bandsaw; one with a 1" wide blade.  Ask for a discarded blade and cut 2,3, or 4 12-18" long sections.  Use however many sections to adjust the thickness of the new 'saw' to suit yourself.  Stack them, clamp them, and tack weld back edge and ends.Voila, new slag saw.  Flexible, less likely to break.  Bi-metal bandsaw blades are as hard or harder than a file.  Not good for dressing weld cap passes, but you can use and abuse it for cleaning 7018 slag out of a pipe joint.Sandwich one end with some 1/8" scraps, and weld around edges and you have a nice handle that balances the blade.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:You can, and I've seen this done.  But for pipe welding, sometimes you'll get into trouble using "too much tool."An air chisel or needle scaler that isn't well controlled may accidentally gouge the surface of the pipe; especially if the joint width is small.  Dents on the outside of the pipe may be cause for failing inspections in some applications.I have also had other pipe welders tell me that they have failed x-ray inspection for too many indentations from chipping hammer strikes or "peening" marks that appear in the X-ray.  I've never seen this myself, so it's just a rumor.  I'm skeptical of this, so take it for what it's worth...A slag saw or file is the right tool for the job when working with small diameter pipe,  in my opinion.  Grinders and wire wheels have their place on larger pipe, or for fixing porosity, cold lap, lack of penetration on root passes, etc.  But I actually prefer hand tools for simple cleanup of fill passes, unless they just won't get the job done.  Hand wire brushes, chipping hammers, and slag saws make less noise, and they don't throw wires or slag chips as far(or as fast).
