Anyone have experience with Crown Alloys Royal 44-30 MIG wire for welding cast iron?I have a small cast iron part that needs a crack repair (cross section is a little bigger than a pencil). I have an AC tombstone and a Lincoln 140 MIG. So I did some investigating and found this stuff and thought I might ask the largest forum of weldors on the Internet! Here's the data sheet:http://www.crownalloys.com/TechSheet/R44.pdfCompany home page:http://www.crownalloys.com/index.phpAnyone here use it and care to comment?Thanks!- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Have zero familiarity with your original question regarding Crown Alloy.a) In general though brazing is almost a can't miss repair on almost all cast iron.b) I have also had good luck repairing some cast iron with Hobart 21B .030 flux core(E71T-11) in my Lincoln SP-135P 115 volt wire feeder. I know not supposedly the right tool for this job but it has worked well for me and I use Hobart 21B (E71T-11) in my wire feeder exclusively as it is suitable for multiple passes on mild steel where most E71T-GS is not suitable for multiple passes. Some of my repairs have even been subjected to extreme shock and metal to metal impact loading (vintage hayrake) and have held up well for years. My guess is your crown alloy might even be more ductile than the E71T-11 that I have used successfully so it might be worth a shot. c) My attempts to use a stick welder on cast iron have never went well even when I supposedly used the proper cast specific rod. I have not tried all the various cast rods, but good luck if you go this route. The real cast experts say stick welding cast iron even with the correct rod is the worst thing you can do to it. I believe them as all my stick welding attempts turned to extreme brittleness.Last edited by rankrank1; 12-28-2013 at 01:26 PM.
Reply:Go for the braze repair. Mind your temperature. 700*-1200* There are excellent cast guys on this site. Practice on similar cast if you can and temp sticks are worth the money. That's good advice only if it works.Arcon Workhorse 300MSPowcon 400SMTPowcon SM400 x 2Powcon SM3001968 SA200 Redface1978 SA250 DieselMiller Super 32P FeederPre 1927 American 14" High Duty LatheK&T Milwaukee 2H Horizontal MillBryan |
