Atlas question

I have been shopping around for my first lathe, and came across an interesting ad.  The guy advertising the lathe says that the minimum spindle speed is 1750rpm??  I was under the assumption that 80-100 was the norm for small lathes???Yes this is my first lathe and I am a complete novice, but am ready to take the leap!Thanks,Scott

Reply:If you think about it, he is probably quoting the speed of the motor itself and not the final speeds of the machine.

Reply:Carefull on the Atlas lathes, many out there in use, and if handled carefully are fine, Watch out though many of the parts are made from light cast metals, sometimes lumped in and referred to a pot metal, in any event very weak and not good when guys bang them or mesh them toghether when running. Many of the gear teeth break, also a lot of the parts in the carriage are mede from this material.
