I'm sure this goes on some peoples lists of most bonehead things to do, so I hope ya'll at least get a kick out of it. :P I've recently decided to try out welding as a possible career, in high school my teachers were constantly pressuring me to do so because I was pretty decent at laying down a nice bead. Anyways, it wasn't the carreer path I choose but I'm interested now and wanted to start practicing on random bits out in the shop. I saw a Lincoln DC-600 on craigslist for 1200, looking up the technical specs I thought, nice 100% duty cycle, supports Stick, TIG, MIG, Flux-Cored, Submerged Arc, Gouging (gouging?) can do everything I'll need it to! Get it home, and my old man instantly noticed it requires 3 phase power, which in most residential areas isn't available. Being I'm tight on cash, I can't afford a phase converter so it's kinda useless to me... I really wanted to fire it up and just listen to it hum The guy that sold it to me did so to make space in his shop, so he can't take it back because he's already filled in the space... not that I would have expected him to. So... Reply:3 phase isn't hard to generate. I happened across 3 each, 7.5 hp 3 phase motors last month alone. I think I paid about $40 each for them.You can use 220V single phase to spin the 3 phase motor and get your 3 phase out of it to run that machine you have. I think the start capacitor is about $10 for my 7.5 hp motor.At the very least you can wire up the 3 phase motor to 220V single phase, wrap a rope around the shaft, spin the shaft real fast and then plug the motor in. If you spun it fast enough it will keep running.Hope this helps.
